My boy’s a genius

by Marilyn on July 15, 2005

I took H in for his kindergarten “Early School Success” screening yesterday. We got to meet his teacher and see his classroom. It was a one on one sort of deal, where the teacher quizzed H on all sorts of different concepts from shapes and colors to hoping on one foot for five seconds. All in all he did pretty well, but I had such a hard time not prompting him on things I *knew* he knew when he wasn’t answering right away. :blush Dear God, I don’t want to be one of those moms.

His teacher is a really nice older lady with grown children of her own. She’s been doing this for years and made a great effort to put H at ease. He was pretty nervous, especially initially. While he was getting tested, I read some papers she gave me, learned all about having your kid in school. There’s so much to digest!

There was a tarantula in the classroom, which I promptly had to point out to H since has a mild spider fear. Did I say mild? That’s probably an understatement. ;) They also had a couple of lizards. H thought they were cool, even the tarantula but he did say, “I’m a little scared of the spider.” I told him I understood, I was a little scared too. :)

I learned some of the dress code ins and outs. Sports sandals are okay as long as he wears socks with them. Shorts are okay too. He actually has a supply list… we need a backpack, pencils, a folder among other things. It’s so exciting! I also learned the pickup procedure and was relieved to see that the kids are kept fairly orderly in the kindergarten playground until their parents come to fetch them. At least they won’t be roaming the halls. There’s also bathrooms right there in the classroom. I guess this isn’t a new thing, but I don’t remember A THING from when I was in kindergarten so this is all a new thing for me. :)

I can’t believe I have a kid who’s going to school. It’s unreal. He was just born last year, wasn’t he? Those of you out there, pregnant with your first, please please please CHERISH those early years because they pass you so fast.
