Why do I keep watching this show?

by Marilyn on September 30, 2005

So… ER… remind me again why this show is still on the air? I don’t think a single original castmember is left, and the stories are lame and… well, last night I got seriously pissed off.

They had this storyline where there was this surrogate mother who was in a car wreck. Nothing serious, but she started to go into labor. No biggie, she was 39 weeks along. However, the baby was breech and not just breech, but a footling breech which mean the babies feet were dangling “outside”. Not really the optimal situation for natural childbirth. Yet, that’s exactly what this chick wanted. She didn’t want a c-section because she wanted to be able do natural childbirth later. Nevermind that it’s entirely possible to have a VBAC, but okay. The parents show up, a nice looking couple who’ve been trying to have a baby for five long years. I know how that goes.

Well you can see where this one is going. She was rushed upstairs to the OR or somesuch and was determined to have this baby naturally because she knew she could do it. Of course, the babies heartrate started to plummet. By the time she was able to birth this child, there was no breathing, no pulse. They resucitated the baby but by then, there was almost certainly brain damage. The parents are devastated, don’t even want to see this baby. They didn’t “pay for” a brain damaged baby. They turned and left the ER. The surrogate doesn’t want him, it’s not her baby. So the poor thing is left all alone in the NICU, destined to a life in foster homes.

You know what? I don’t buy it, and I don’t appreciate them trying to tug at my heartstrings with it. First off: no one is that stupid as to absolutely refuse a c-section when everyone is telling her she needs to have one. At least I hope not. No one could be so selfish as to put their own life ahead of an unborn babies, if its their own child or not. I would HOPE. Secondly: I don’t think a couple that has tried for five long years would just turn their backs on this baby just like that. Brain damaged or no, that’s their child. You would *at least* want to see him, wouldn’t you? So I definitely am not buying the parents just walking out like that. Yeah. Right.

Plus, I think the doctors would have been a little more insistant about the c-section. The only one really championing the cause was the guy from the ER (of course). Everyone elses suggestions were halfhearted at best. Puh-lease.

That episode was an insult. An insult to my intelligence and to my sensibilities when it comes to newborn babies. Why the HELL am I still watching this show??

two headed turtle

You get the weirdest pictures from Yahoo’s “Most Emailed Photos”. Also of note? Chewbacca throwing the first pitch at the BoSox’s game vs Toronto and the baby aardvark, though the chihuahua dressed as Spider-man gets points for cuteness.

Michael is kinda a dick, isn’t he?

by Marilyn on September 29, 2005

Okay, last night’s Lost was fantastic. That should pretty much go without saying anymore. If I did take any exception to the episode, it was Michael. Who was really being a jerk. I mean, I get it, he’s upset that Walt got snatched and all. And he has issues from losing him once before already. But come on, dude! You don’t just go around and bite the hand that just saved your pathetic life, do you? His treatment of Sawyer, who was being totally AWESOME last night, was just plain GRR. I wanted to sock him good many a time.

What was with going back in time to show us more about The Adventures Inside the Hatch? I mean, not that it wasn’t interesting and informative, but hello? Repetitive! However, it was kinda nice to see what happened with Kate and the part where she raided the candy bars sorta rocks (cuz, you know you would have done the same exact thing). But I probably could have slept just as well without knowing her fate, ya know? I spent most of the show wondering and worrying about Jin, not Kate.

And Jin? So GLAD he’s alive. But how the hell did the Others get him? Yowzers! They don’t look incredibly hospitible, do they? Next week will be fantastic. What else is new? ;)

Oh, and Charlie? You don’t need the Virgin Mary now nor will you need her in the future. Trust me.

Slacker

by Marilyn on September 28, 2005

K took today off work. Which came as a surprise to me about 7am this morning when instead of getting in the shower like usual, he got back in bed. He’s the worst influence on me, his “calling in sick” gave me permission to call in sick myself and we both slept in for about three more hours. THREE people! I haven’t slept that late since I was a teenager. Oh, the humanity.

I pretty much did nothing of consequence the entire day. Again, I blame K. We ran some errands, played around, had beers with our neighbors… I slacked off today. And you know what? It felt FABULOUS. Not something I could do every day.

Because the guilt? Was awful. As good as taking a sick day felt, I felt this horrible guilt all day long. One thing about working for yourself: you can make yourself one hell of a boss. Honestly, Ive never had a more demanding, pencil-pushing, task-master.
