That Katrina is a Bitch

Utter Devastation

I may not have said anything about it yet this week, but rest assured, I’ve been watching what’s happening down on the Gulf Coast and thinking about the poor victims and survivors of Hurricane Katrina every day. And it seriously breaks my heart. I mean, I knew this was going to be bad. Last weekend, when I would hear reports of this hurricane headed towards New Orleans and the “worst-case scenario” reports, I had a bad feeling. And it’s so much worse than I thought it would be. I often think of the poor people whose homes are obliterated or flooded beyond repair, who have no food, no car, no water, no medicine…NOTHING. I wish I could be down there, bringing them some relief, somehow. It’s a nightmare situation, and that’s putting it lightly.

What I got for donatingBeing in Reno, Nevada, there isn’t a whole lot I *can* do. Donating water, food and blankets and such isn’t very feasible right now. There’s no good way to get those supplies to the people who need them in a timely manner. If we were closer, we could do more good, but being so far, the best way to help is donating money. One of the biggest efforts here in town is being put on by a television station as well as several radio stations. It was supposed to only be today but there was such a response, that they’re going to collect donations tomorrow morning as well. I wanted to help *somehow* so after K got off work we drove down to the site and gave them some cash. Such sweet people, they gave us a carnation as a way of thanks.

I felt good, but I would have felt better had I been able to do more. I heartily encourage any of you out there to do what you can. Consider donating money to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army. There are a lot of people out there who need a lot of help.
