1:18 pm - Mile 28
We’re on our way! After a horribly hectic morning, I’m amazed that we were able to leave on schedule. I’ll explain more about that later on. We packed up the van, wolfed down hot dogs and dropped by the school to pick H up from kindgergarten (woo hoo for half days!!) before we got on the road.
Right now, Beetoe is perched precariously on my lap, sniffing at the air coming through the a/c vent. She’s so excited she can barely think straight. “Rich Girl” by Gwen Stefani is on the cd player. So far, so good. We’re nearly to the other end of the canyon that connects Reno to Fernley. Hey, we just passed by the old Mustang Ranch! Gotta love the brothels.
1:53 pm - Mile 72
We’re trucking across the “40 Mile Desert” between Fernley and Lovelock. So… not much to look at. As you can see. Of course, right about now is when the batteries in my camera have gone kaput so no more pictures, at least, until I can get new batteries. Lovely. Anyhow. “Enter Sandman” is playing on the cd player, a great traveling song. Everyone is pretty quiet. Even the dog, who has now settled down and is reclining in her doggie bed in the backseat. Which frees up a lot of room on my lap! :) H is trying to poke holes in the sandwich bag that formerly held his peanut butter and jelly sandwich. And me? When I’m not doing this blogging thing, I’m gazing out at the nothingness and grooving to the tunes. We’re doing a cool 80mph right now, and there are still people that pass us. Gotta love Nevada.
2:33 pm - Mile 126
We’ve switched cds, now it’s Shania Twain. The current song? “Ain’t no Particular Way” Pretty kicky song. :) Still not a lot of anything to look at, even though we’re past Lovelock and heading towards Winnemucca. I’ve seen several billboards that try to pimp Winnemucca and Elko…as if that’s possible. Oh, and here’s a billboard that says, simply, “JESUS LIVES” with the url www.AdsForGod.org underneath. Cute. Who says Nevada is godless?
Somewhere north of here is a raging party. Burning Man is taking place out by Gerlach in the Black Rock desert. My only opinion on it is I don’t like how they all come into town and hoard into our Walmart’s, clogging up the booze and chips aisles. You should have seen all of them the other night when we were doing our grocery shopping. They’re everywhere! Anywho…
So this morning (since hey, I have time here) we had planned to get up at 7am. Of course, we didn’t wake up until 7:30. And even then, K remained in bed for a while longer while I finished packing my suitcase. Then he got up and I hopped into the shower while he packed. Then we had cereal and had to catch up on the latest Katrina horror. It’s all bad news, baby. Our plan was to leave about 9am and on our way to see the RE, stop at the cemetery to place the stone we made for Jackson. But we didn’t leave until after 9:30. So we didn’t get to the cemetery until nearly 10am. By the time we got the stone placed and left, it was 10:20, and our appointment was at 10:30. We’d planned to drop some paperwork at the church (which is literally right next door to the RE’s office) but we had no time, as we were already late to the appointment. So I wasn’t able to get that done, one thing of many it would seem.
The appointment went pretty well. We were both surprised at the doc’s interest in finding out why this miscarriage happened. Until now, every other doc seemed rather blase about it. But he was curious and figured if there was something to do to prevent this happening again, why not, right? So we did a blood draw right then and there to check for something, I’ve already forgotten what. As it had to be sent to a lab in California, we had to pay out $191 right then and there, but we could get some of that back later on from insurance. Next week I have to go in and get tested for anti-thyroid antibodies and get a thrombophilic panel done. Aren’t you jealous? But it was nice to have someone really care for a change, you know? He seemed to be genuinely perplexed, upset and pro-active about it. After my cycle resumes, I have to go in and get a “water ultrasound” done (which damn, that doesn’t sound fun AT ALL) and THEN we’ll see where we’re at. With the test results, we should be able to find out what steps we need to do next, either treat a problem or go ahead with the Clomid. So it could be a couple months before we’re officially back on the TTC train again. Kinda frustrating, as I was hoping to get pregnant again as soon as I can, but I can understand and whole-heartedly agree with the process.
After that, it was hurry back up to our neighborhood to drop H at half day kindergarten and then back home to pack up the van and grab the dog (and lunch). And here we are. Present day and time. Which is now 2:48 and we’re on mile 145. Almost halfway there!
3:43pm - Mile 190
Still listening to Shania. ;) This time it’s “I’m not in the Mood (To Say No)”. We’ve left Winnemucca behind, where I picked up some batteries for my camera at The Flying J and we all went to the potty (even Beetoe) and grabbed some road snacks from McDonald’s. We figure we should be there in two hours. This whole area looks like it’s been repaved or “oiled” (much like the interstate by our house was) this summer. Nice and black. Can’t imagine what a pain that was for travelers though.
4:17pm - Mile 235
We just passed Battle Mountain, once called “The Armpit of America” by some reporter. For the longest time, there was a billboard outside of town that had this catchphrase on it and underneath it said, “We didn’t know you were looking!” That always made K and I bust a gut laughing. Battle Mountain is also where Beetoe was born. The breeder we got her from lives there, so often we threaten to drop her off there when we pass. ;) Evil, I know.
4:51pm -Mile 280
We’re passing the teeny town of Carlin right now, which means we’re getting really close to Elko. Which also puts us quite ahead of schedule. It’s only 20 miles to Elko from here. We passed this area in the mountains to the west that had had some brush fires earlier in the summer and you could still see the red fire supressant on the road and the brush, pretty wild. I tried to take a picture but that sort of thing is hard to photograph. This trip has gone really fast; I attribute a lot of that to the blogging. We should be there before I know it!
5:08pm - Mile 301
And, we made it. And like I said, ahead of schedule to boot! So with “Testify to Love” by Wynonna blasting on the radio, we blow into town. Wish us a weekend of relaxation. We’ve earned it!
