My auto love affair

Posted on January 5th, 2006

My van: The rearAfter yesterday’s (sometimes controversial) post about the evils of SUVs, I thought it best to show that there are large vehicles which I do love and admire. Namely? The minivan. Even more specific? MY minivan.? It’s a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport, the color is called “Champagne” (how perfect is that??).? We got it when it was only a few months old with only a few thousand miles on it.? To us?? It was brand new.? (Please pay no attention to the dirt on the windows and such..it’s winter and all the roads are NASTY so there’s no helping it.? Also, pay no attention to all the CRAP in our garage.? Thanks.)? And it was just what I wanted.? Now, like Denise said in the comments for yesterday’s post, I’m not going to say we wanted a minivan because we had kids.? Because that right there is laughable.? We have a kid.? Just one.? Not nearly enough to justify a minivan.

My van: The FrontWhen H was born, we had a little Dodge Neon.? Which suited us at the time, as a married couple sans children.? But after a couple car trips in that puppy with the baby in tow, we learned that there is such a thing as practicality.? And I started to daydream about minivans.? Imagine all the strollers, Pack n’ Plays, tricycles we could fit in a MINIVAN.? And imagine the room!? I could get out of the passenger seat and get into the backseat to tend the baby without having to get out of the car!? And let’s not forget the grocery store!? I could fit all the groceries in the WORLD in the back of that thing.

We started out with a regular 1999 Dodge Caravan, which we purchased used in the fall of 2001.? Not very big, didn’t have the seat configuration I truly wanted but it was a great start and I fell in love with that van.? So much in love, than when it came time to get our new(er) van, we didn’t trade it in and instead kept it (K drives it to work to this day.? Yes, we have TWO minivans.) because we knew we couldn’t get near what it was worth on a trade in.

I love my minivan.? Yes, they’re pretty large vehicles, just like SUVs.? But I’m in love with the practicality of them.? Plus it’s so darned comfortable on long car trips. :) Maybe part of my beef with SUVs is because these people are looking down their noses at minivans because they’re “uncool” and I’m just frankly offended by that.? Because in case you haven’t noticed yet.? I LOVE MY MINIVAN.? I’m always telling people they’ll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers. ? So there you have it: a class of vehicle that I don’t abhor. :)
