My auto love affair

My van: The rearAfter yesterday’s (sometimes controversial) post about the evils of SUVs, I thought it best to show that there are large vehicles which I do love and admire. Namely? The minivan. Even more specific? MY minivan.? It’s a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport, the color is called “Champagne” (how perfect is that??).? We got it when it was only a few months old with only a few thousand miles on it.? To us?? It was brand new.? (Please pay no attention to the dirt on the windows and such..it’s winter and all the roads are NASTY so there’s no helping it.? Also, pay no attention to all the CRAP in our garage.? Thanks.)? And it was just what I wanted.? Now, like Denise said in the comments for yesterday’s post, I’m not going to say we wanted a minivan because we had kids.? Because that right there is laughable.? We have a kid.? Just one.? Not nearly enough to justify a minivan.

My van: The FrontWhen H was born, we had a little Dodge Neon.? Which suited us at the time, as a married couple sans children.? But after a couple car trips in that puppy with the baby in tow, we learned that there is such a thing as practicality.? And I started to daydream about minivans.? Imagine all the strollers, Pack n’ Plays, tricycles we could fit in a MINIVAN.? And imagine the room!? I could get out of the passenger seat and get into the backseat to tend the baby without having to get out of the car!? And let’s not forget the grocery store!? I could fit all the groceries in the WORLD in the back of that thing.

We started out with a regular 1999 Dodge Caravan, which we purchased used in the fall of 2001.? Not very big, didn’t have the seat configuration I truly wanted but it was a great start and I fell in love with that van.? So much in love, than when it came time to get our new(er) van, we didn’t trade it in and instead kept it (K drives it to work to this day.? Yes, we have TWO minivans.) because we knew we couldn’t get near what it was worth on a trade in.

I love my minivan.? Yes, they’re pretty large vehicles, just like SUVs.? But I’m in love with the practicality of them.? Plus it’s so darned comfortable on long car trips. :) Maybe part of my beef with SUVs is because these people are looking down their noses at minivans because they’re “uncool” and I’m just frankly offended by that.? Because in case you haven’t noticed yet.? I LOVE MY MINIVAN.? I’m always telling people they’ll have to pry it from my cold, dead fingers. ? So there you have it: a class of vehicle that I don’t abhor. :)

I’m with you. I was drooling at minivans after a few trips with my son and I purchased the minivan during my second *short* pregnancy. I love it. I want to trade up to one that has the folding seats but other than that I’m pretty darn happy!

PS.. I’m anti SUV when I see ten SUVs with only one person in them commuting to DC.But, my family tells me to shut my mouth. They’ll drive whatever they want and can afford.

Hmmm.. When I see 10 minivans with only one person in them, I.. don’t give it a second thought. It seems there’s a perception that SUVs are ‘rich’ and therefore evil. A lot of the negativity I hear relates to the owners ability to afford them or to them being snobs (which is related to $). Which is sad. Surprisingly, not much talk about them as gas guzzlers and enviro stuff anymore. Minivans and station wagons never generated so much ire, did they? They have a lot of the same size/gas issues to a different degree. So is it just a money thing? I myself - I’d love to have a mini-van for the convenience factors mentioned (it would be HEAVEN to be able to go back in the back without getting out or performing contorsions best left to Cirque du Soleil), but alas dh swore he’d never own one for his own reasons (his mom had one and I think he formed his opinion early). Interesting conversation!!

Well, minivans do get better gas mileage than SUVs. Our averages around 20mpg while a friend of ours SUV averages around 15mpg. Of course, you know the minute they release that hybrid minivan I’m all over it.? THE only thing that could make me give up my current van.

No, a good minivan costs as much as the SUV, so I don’t see it as a money thing. But I do see it as a snobbery thing…they want a large car but wouldn’t DARE be caught dead in a minivan, which I think is just silly.? (though I wouldn’t be caught dead in a Pontiact Aztec cuz they’re UGLY, so maybe I’m silly too)
