Ankleversary

by Marilyn on January 25, 2006

Remember this?Ahh, the memories. It was one year ago today… almost to the hour (give it another half hour), that I was a big huge idiot and decided to take on the driveway ice. Oh, the idiocy. Sure, I’ll just go out, toss some ice melt down, maybe chip at it some with my boots or a shovel (or both!). What’s the worst that could happen? A snap, crackle, pop later and I found out the unfortunate answer to that question. Ice: 1, CallistaWolf: 0. My ankle snapped like a dry twig. And OH the PAIN. THE PAIN! It was like 9 hours of childbirth distilled down into 1 agonizing moment. Holy moses.

But what I also remember? How fabulous my poor son was. He was five then and I didn’t even know how resourceful he was. He brought me the phone, so I could call K while laying on the icy driveway, writhing in pain. He held the door open so I could crawl into the house. He got a pillow for my head, a blanket to keep me warm, the remote control so I could entertain myself and a bag of chips so I wouldn’t get hungry. Did he cry? Nope. Not a tear. Did he show any fear at all? Not a bit, though I know he had to be. What an awesome kid. No, you can’t have him, I saw him first.

That moment, on a cold, icy January 25th, my next several months were transformed. And I learned just how tedious having to lay in bed day after day really could be. I learned how much I hated to be helpless. I also learned I need to take Phenergan with my pain meds or else I’ll throw up. And that Phenergan makes me SLEEPY. You’d think that’d make having to lay around in bed easier and sure, why not? But what about after you don’t take the pain pills anymore? Two story houses with no downstairs bathroom are the BANE of any person with a broken leg or ankle. Just trust me.

Ahh, that’s the past. This year is much better, so far. :) And me? I avoid ice like it’s the bubonic plague. I may be a little naive, but I’m not stupid. ;)
