Wow, I did pretty good

by Marilyn on March 5, 2006

Oscar night is over.? The champagne has been poured and drank (and then some), the celebrities are off to their glittery parties and K and I are looking for something else to do with the rest of our evening.? My ass?? HURTS from sitting all day long. I’ve watched a lot of movies and TV today.

So I was right on a few and wrong on a few.? The supporting roles?? I BOMBED.? K picked Supporting Actor correctly, damn him.? But I got most of the big awards spot on which helped me “win” tonight.? I get my pick of a place to go out to eat.? Which to K, isn’t really a bad thing.? I picked Macaroni Grill, becuase I lurve it.? He lurves it too, although he probably would have chosen P.F. Changs.? Did I not call “Crash” winning Best Picture??? Do I not RULE?? The categories I totally stunk up the joint on were ones like Art Direction, Costume Design, Original Score, etc.? Those are piddling categories and should hardly count. ;)? All in all, I got 13 correct to K’s 11.

Now, for a few Oscar night observations:

  • Naomi Watts’ dress looks like she walked into a paper shredder.? Seriously.? And the color was HIDEOUS.
  • George Clooney’s acceptance speech was the best of the night, I think.? LOVE how he turned the “out of touch” label around.? You go boy.
  • The winners for Costume Design thanking the people of Japan?!? Why, did they help pick the outfits?? That made NO sense.
  • “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” winning Best Original Song… I have no words.? That’s just… not good.
  • The dude who accepted the award for Best Film Editing for “Crash” was TOTALLY drunk.? Wasn’t he?

Much fun was had by all.? K was a little bitter that “Crash” won (he picked “Brokeback Mountain”) until I reminded him that he thought “Crash” was the best movie of the five (and believe me, we saw ALL FIVE) and he just picked “Brokeback” to be different.? “I did?” was his response.? Anywho, goodnight everyone.? Tomorrow?? Ultrasound Day.? :woot

Prognostications

by Marilyn on March 5, 2006

As with every year, I’m putting myself out there and predicting Oscar wins.? Does anyone else watch the Academy Awards, or is it just me?? Am I *that* big a nerd?? This was a rough year because we just haven’t SEEN anything.? Well, we’ve seen a few but I feel so uninformed.? So please excuse my ignorance, if I display any.? If I display only brilliance, then forget what I just said.

  • Best Picture - “Crash”.? Yes, over “Brokeback Mountain”.? I’ve seen both and while both are excellent movies, I felt “Crash” was the film that resonated better.? I had more of an emotional reaction to that one.
  • Best Actor - Philip Seymour Hoffman for “Capote”.? I haven’t seen this one (yet), but I’ve heard wonderful things about his performance.? I thought Heath did a great job in “Brokeback” though, and so did Joaquin in “Walk the Line.”? If I were picking, it’d be one of them, but this is about being right and not about what I want. ;)
  • Best Actress - Reese Witherspoon for “Walk the Line.”? Pretty tough, as I really loved Keira Knightly in “Pride and Prejudice” but there just hasn’t been ANY buzz over her.? And Reese was a pretty good June Carter.
  • Best Director -?? They’ll probably give this one to Ang Lee for “Brokeback Mountain”, since it won’t get Best Picture (like how confident I am about that??).
  • Best Supporting Actor - Matt Dillon for “Crash” since he was the only cast member nominated they might give it to him to honor the whole cast. If not him then George Clooney for “Syriana” (but really it will be for his work on “Good Night and Good Luck”).
  • Best Supporting Actress - I really want to say Michelle Williams for “Brokeback Mountain”, to honor the cast.? But it might be Amy Adams for “Junebug” which I’m sure NO ONE saw.
  • Best Animated Feature - “Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit”.? That’s just a gimmie right there.? No question.
  • Best Documentary Feature - “March of the Penguins”.? I heard “Murderball” also has a chance but I’m going out on the line here.? It was just so gosh-darned CUTE.
  • Best Adapted Screenplay - “Brokeback Mountain”.? I’m a little surprised “Pride and Prejudice” wasn’t nominated.? But I think “Brokeback” will take it.
  • Best Original Screenplay - I’m going to say “Crash” because have you SEEN that movie?? It’s flawless.? It has to be hard to handle all those storylines and make it easy to follow but they did it.? It deserves this one.

Of course, there are other nominees and whatnot, but that’s all I’m prognosticating here today.? I have a sheet at home so that K and I can have our annual bet on who picks the most winners.? But I’m sure you all don’t really care which movie I think will win “Best Art Direction”.? I’m going out on a limb on that one.

So all of you at home, go cuddle up on the couch, have a beer, glass of wine, soda, etc and a bowl of popcorn and watch the show.? Even if only to make fun of people’s dresses and the absurdity of some of the acceptance speeches.
