The New Norm

by Marilyn on April 23, 2006

It's raining. Again. There was a time when I thought I knew the weather in Reno. I can barely remember when that time was, but there WAS a time.? For the last year or so, we’ve been having strange weather.? It started with a few rainshowers in October of 2004.? And then the big snowstorm of New Years a few months later.? And it’s just kept going.? This year it was rain.? Lots and lots and LOTS of rain.? It’s been raining here all weekend long.? And it’s the kind of rain we just don’t SEE here in Nevada.? The sort of rain most other places in the country get and don’t think twice about. That wet, constant, drenching rain.

Now, we’re not near as bad off as portions of California, but by Nevada standards, this is WEIRD.? Or I would think it’s weird if it wasn’t like the billionth time I’ve said that about the weather lately.? There comes a time, around the second year of talking about weird the weather is that you gotta start wondering: Is this REALLY weird?? Or is this how the weather *IS* here now?? Maybe in the past Reno didn’t get drenched in rain but maybe now we do.? What about piles of snow?? Can we expect this every year?? What the HECK?

I’ve heard lots of people talk about climate shifts, global warming, etc and so forth.?? And certainly Reno isn’t the only place seeing weird weather these days.? New Orleans anyone?? Florida?? Tennessee?? What’s with all the hurricanes and tornados?? And speaking of severe weather… we saw lightning yesterday.? I very nearly said, “But it’s too early for thunderstorms” before I remembered that nothing is “too early” or “too late” or “too much” anymore.? Not here and not anywhere else either.

Fear, people, FEAR.
