I’m coming out…

Posted on June 2nd, 2006

…so you better get this party started!

Too cheesy?? Yeah, probably.

Okay, this is something I’ve been chewing over for months here.? I got started blogging anonymously becuase that seemed like the safest choice.? Not that I’ve been a big proponent of internet anonymity.? Before I had this blog, I had a webpage where I never tried to hide my identity and some possibly implicating details. ;)? So why be anonymous with the blog?

Good question.? I thought it would help me write more freely.? And perhaps, in the beginning, that was true.? If no one knew who I was, then what sort of accountability would I have to hold myself to?

Of course now, with my design business, I’m not really hiding my identity anymore.? And with BlogHer looming, I didn’t want to be wandering around with my (rather silly now that I think about it) psuedonym on my nametag.? But if I went around with my real name, no one would know who the heck I was.? Not that anyone would know anyhow because I’m probably pretty small potatoes compartively.? So I’ve been wanting to “come out” before the conference starts, and have been kinda unsure how to go about it.

Do I just say, “Hi!? My name is…..!”? Do I slip it into an average entry, hoping that no one will really notice the change and will just get used to the notion of knowing who I am?? Riiight.? So I decided to write this post.? Explain myself and my reasons.? And try not to look like sugh a raging dork. (Not doing so well on that last one, huh?)

So my name is Marilyn.? I hate my name.? I was named after my mother’s sister.? So it’s rather old-fashioned for someone my age (30).? Not that I don’t love my aunt.? But I would have loved to have been named Sarah or Julie or Jessica.? Oh well.? No one likes their name, right?? It’s just aggravating to have to spell it out for people and there’s just no good nickname for it.? Most times, friends will shorten it to “Mar”, but that’s about as good as it gets.? Ho hum!

K = Kile.? And yes, that’s an “i” in there.? Quite possibly the only Kile who spells his name with an “i”.? He’s also very used to people misspelling his name though he will definitely correct them if he gets a chance.? He’d like to pass on this name somehow… but isn’t wild about having a “Jr” in the house so that’s why none of our children have been named after him yet. :)

H = Harrison.? But he insists on being called Harry.? For the longest time, it was the other way around.? If you called him Harry he’d call you out, correct you.? But since he’s been in school, it’s Harry and don’tyouforgetit.? We joke that he was named after Harrison Ford, but not really.? We may have gotten the idea from Han Solo himself, but we ultimately picked the name because we loved how it sounded.? Plus, depending on the child’s preference, it could be as formal or informal as they wanted.

Now, I’m not leaking any baby names… at least not yet.? Let’s wait until we know for sure what “flavor” we have before letting that particular cat out of the bag. :)

I live in Reno, NV, but grew up in San Jose, CA.? Kile grew up in Wyoming.? Harry was born here.? I came up here to go to school and somehow stuck.? It’s not like I always wanted to live in Reno.? Someday, we may move.? We talk about it all the time.? But for now, this is where we are.? And not always a great match as far as I’m concerned since I’m downright phobic about heat.? But that’s a whole other story.

So this is who we are.? I’m going to try to refer to us by our own names.? The whole “K” and “H” thing was pretty lame anyhow. ;)? So that’s who we are.? Now please, don’t stalk us and send us letter bombs or call us in the middle of the night.? Not that we ever answer the phone anyhow. ;)
