My son (my oldest son, because now I have two… I forget that often) is turning seven this week. SEVEN. Let that number roll around in your head for a minute. That’s like middle school and high school. That’s college and a masters (and then some!). That’s a long freaking time. And he’s SEVEN YEARS OLD. It has been seven years since his (traumatic) birth. And I honestly can’t believe it. It seems like he should be three, maybe four tops. But he’s seven and he’s going to first grade and he’s getting TALL. He’s so grown up, he’s reading so much, writing all the time and doing big kid things. It freaks me out.
He’s having his first real big birthday party on Saturday. Any birthday parties we’ve had in the past have been family affairs. One year we went to Chuck E. Cheese, just us and him and that was fun. But this year, it was time for a real party. And he is so excited about it, it’s making me a little excited. Even though the prospect of that many kids sorta gives me the cold sweats. The bonus is we’re not having it here at home, we’re having it at a place called “The Coconut Bowl” and while it sounds like we’re going bowling, we’re really not. There’s this play structure/whatever next to the party area and the kids run around in there and act insane for two hours. That’s a birthday party these days. It’s pulling teeth to get them to come eat pizza, cake and open presents. But the kids love it and just about EVERYONE has a party there. Of course, it costs an arm and a leg so we’ll be eating ramen the rest of the month.
It’ll be worth it. And then some. I’m so excited for my little boy. He’s handing out invitations at school today and he’s just so JAZZED about it. My baby. He’s not so much a baby anymore, is he?

I gave up home birthdays when my first son turned 7, too much effort. Plus, kids love Ramen -even on the 8th nigth in a row.
Congratulations!
