It’s come to this.? First solids.? Has it been four months already?? Heck, four months?? We’re working on the fifth! Ignoring the fact that I’m entirely not ready for this phase of life, we decided to try Liam’s First Cereal tonight.? Our pediatrician recommended we start with good ol’ rice cereal and so we did.? We waited until Liam was good and hungry, per doctor’s orders.? We (still) don’t have a high chair so we just used the trusty bouncy seat.? After finding (and securing) a bib, it was time to start.? I sat with the camera at the ready, determined to capture the event for posterity (though why it didn’t occur to me to get some video, I have no idea).
Kile did the honors, spooning the cereal that had been so watered down with breastmilk it didn’t even remotely resemble a solid.? And Liam?? Was game.? He’d open his mouth happily for each bite and kick his legs excitedly between bites.? He was in such a good mood about it that we kept feeding him until he’d nearly finished off the small portion we’d prepared.? Of course, he didn’t quite know what to do with it once he got it in his mouth.? And more often than not, more cereal would end up getting spit back out than was kept in his mouth and swallowed.? But I say for a first try, he did really well.? He enjoyed the whole operation.? We may not wait until he’s quite so hungry the next time, because he did seem so intent on eating that it became a rather messy deal.
But honestly?? He’s been more than ready and I knew it.? I wanted to wait until the doctor gave us his go-ahead.? And the doctor did say we could wait until Liam was 6 months even, before trying.? But he also said that was mostly for if we were concerned about allergies.? Since we don’t have many allergies that run in our family, we figured the benefits would outweigh the risks.? Mere milk hasn’t been seeming to satisfy him as much anymore.? I’m just not ready to lose my infant yet.? I want him to be little still and it’s becoming more and more apparent that he is just NOT.
I’m also not ready for the change in the diaper department.? Everything has been so nice and inoffensive so far that I fear for the rank-ness that will inevitably follow!
