300 Miles

by Marilyn on February 11, 2007

My child is currently 300 miles away from me, give or take 20 miles (and probably more give than take).  And there’s something that feels so unbelievably unnatural about that.  It’s not right to be so far from him, not knowing what he’s doing at any given moment, how he’s feeling, or where exactly he is.  I do know that he spent the night at my brother in law’s house last night and will probably be there for several nights.  This is a good thing, they have kids (albeit ones that are quite a bit older than my son, but they all get along really well consideirng the age difference).   My sister-in-law runs a day care and after-school program out of her house so there’ll be lots of kids to play with during the week as well.  They have good, home-cooked meals and strict bedtimes.  It’ll be good for him there.  Good for me?  That’s another matter.

I miss him.  It hasn’t been 24 hours yet, but I miss him.  The distance is killing me.  Because I know it would take a good five hours to get to him, should I need to.  I know, sensitive boy that he is, that he’ll be missing us too.  We made him promise to call us every day and I know I’ll be living for those calls.  I’m not used to this.  You’d think after seven years, that this wouldnt’ be the first time we’d done this.  I miss my boy.  I can’t wait to see him again.

Kisses In puppy news,  the puppy is… very much a puppy.  This dog plays hard and sleeps hard.  We still aren’t sure on a name for her.  We’re starting to wonder if she is a Cora OR a Poptart.  She seems more of a scrappier sort than either of those names would indicate.  So we may come up with some new names and let Harry pick from those.   She’s a “private pooper”, and prefers to go in some corner or under some piece of furniture than go outside.  But peeing outside has gone really, really well.  She slept in bed with Kile last night.  He woke up and went out with her twice, at 2 and at 5:30 but each of those times he had to wake her up to go out.  Beetoe remains mostly unsure about her and is extremely protective of my lap.  Anything that Beetoe considers HERS, is HERS, damnit.  But she has played with the pup a little and I imagine after a few days (or weeks) she’ll have finally relaxed around the little bugger and they’ll be good friends.  I hope.

I can really relate to this. We’ve had our new puppy for a little over a week and boy do puppies play hard and sleep hard…you hit that nail right on the head.

I’ve found crate training to be a God-send. Peanut went poop and pee in the house until I got her into the crate routine. She will still pee in her crate and poop in the kitchen (thank God it’s tile), but that is simply because she’s a youngster (9 weeks) and doesn’t quite have control of her bathroom habits just due to her age.

In any case, puppies are fun. Peanut slept through the night in her crate without having to go to the bathroom around day 3. I found it helpful to limit her water intake a couple of hours before her bedtime.

Good luck with the new pup!
