Summing it up

Posted on Tuesday, April 17th, 2007, 9:32 AM

Yesterday was a busy day around here.  And now that it is today and today is significantly less busy, I’m all the more grateful for how busy I was yesterday.  Because I didn’t have much time to sit around and be sucked into the special reports and constant bombardment with the evil face of humanity.  But first, why was I busy?

Cuz I’m getting a life, ya’ll.  I know, I’m probably the most surprised of everyone.  I think I finally have a friend.  Sure, I’ve had friends here in Reno before.  Most of them, though, have been mere acquaintances and friendly faces at group gatherings.  There have been no plans made, no secrets shared, etc and so forth.  But now I can say without fear of a jinx that I think I’ve finally found a good friend that I can hang out with and enjoy spending time with on a purely social basis.  Yesterday, I joined this friend with another mutual friend/acquaintance for coffee after we walked our children to school.  And it was marvelous.  We sipped yummy coffee, ate some fantastic white chocolate chip/macadamia nut cookie soaked in some sort of heavenly key lime sauce.  And we yakked.  Like women do, we just kicked up our feet and chewed the fat.  And I left there several hours later practically humming.  And when I got home, the energy was just surging.  I had invited my new friend to come over for dinner with her children.  Her husband is out of town for several days and I know how lonely and boring that can be.  So the energy was much appreciated as I hustled around the house, cleaning.

Yes, you read that right.  CLEANING.  I can see my floor, I can see the top of the coffee table and our kitchen table is devoid of toys and various boy-related detrius.  The toilet in the half-bath sparkles, goddamnit.   And I have the coffee to thank for it.  When I spoke to my friend at the afternoon school pick-up, she mentioned enjoying the same sort of energy boost.  We are going to do the coffee thing every Monday now because we’ve decided it’s a fantastic way to start the week.  I got things done and it was marvelous.

And dinner last night was great too.  We had a good time and while Kile may have geeked out a bit too much about video games (she’s not a gamer), the conversation was great too.  And the boys, who are in the same class and good friends, had a blast tearing up the loft.  Luckily, you can hardly tell because the loft is always torn up.  Harry was especially psyched that he got to play Xbox last night when he’s normally restricted to one hour on the weekend.

I have a social life!  We’re planning to go get cheap pedicures at Walmart in May!  We’re planning family movie nights!  I’m going to her baby shower in a couple weeks!  Hallelujah!

Now, I’m going to take it down a notch or two… despite my happy business yesterday, I did hear of the VATech massacre (I hate that word).  My husband works at the university here in town and naturally it was big news there.  It pressed on his mind all day long, I could tell.  I almost don’t even know what to think.  I can’t wrap my head around the numbers and the seeming randomness of it all.  Why?  Why, why why?  I have nothing eloquent to say, nothing comforting, nothing smart.  The heartbreak is overwhelming for everyone involved.  My heart is with all of them.  I hope we get some more answers soon, such as WHY the classes were not canceled after the first shooting.  WHY.
