Check that out! Have I arrived or what? I’m not just going to BlogHer, I’m speaking. Sweet, huh? Now pardon me while I start freaking the heck out. Why, because a) I’m assuming speaking means getting up in front of at least a dozen other people (probably more though I dare not think about it) b) I’m afraid those dozen people will realize I don’t know what the heck I’m talking about and c) this is all provided, of course, I can even afford to GET THERE.
BlogHer is in Chicago this year. It was so much simpler last year when it was in San Jose. Because, being the city I was born and raised in, I had a free place to stay and it’s within easy driving distance of Reno. But Chicago is a whole ‘nother ball of wax. I have to fly to get there, obviously. Actually, I’m not so worried about the plane tickets. While I don’t have them in my possession yet (and I stress yet), there’s a plan for getting them. The room is a little more dicey, as I’m not sure how these things are worked. If you’re sharing, do you both reserve with a credit card or does one person do it? Does the hotel charge anything to your card before you check in? If you’re sharing, will they split the bill between two cards if there are two people in the room? This is completely new territory for me, I’ve never done anything like this before. And, because I’m an enormous nerd, things that are unknown to me stress me the heck out. I worry about these unknowns in a very obsessive sort of fashion.
I’ll also be traveling alone, without my family. And that’ll be stressful too. We’re talking about the better part of four days away from my family. And I haven’t been away from Liam for more than a couple hours for his entire life, much less FOUR DAYS and I fully expect to be suffering massive withdrawals before the first day is out.
So this promises to be quite the fun and exciting weekend, does it not? Full of neuroses and withdrawals and all sorts of good stuff. Don’t you wish you were going to BlogHer now? And, if you are going, aren’t you glad? If you are, let me know. Are you scared or excited? Or both?

Generally, when sharing a hotel room, one person reserves it with a credit card. No charges are made to that credit card until checkout, at which point I’m sure the hotel would split the charges across more than one card if requested to do so. They want your money, there’s no reason why they should be difficult about that.
You will definitely not be the only one with the shakes from family withdrawal, so you will find plenty of empathy on that front.
As for the speaking, I can never figure out why they won’t put whatever panel I’m on FIRST so I can get it over with and relax for the rest of the conference! But it can be fun, and everyone who spoke last year was still alive on the last day of the conference - so I think even though it can be stressful it’s not actually dangerous.
