June’s just begun and I’m totally screwed

Posted on June 5th, 2007

So my seven year old is out of school this month.  We’re about, oh, a week and a half into a six week break and I think it’s safe to say that I’m in big time trouble here.  The child?  He is bored.  I am no fun, whatsoever, apparently.  While he assures me that he loves me and I’m the best mama ever (aww), I never do anything fun.  I always want to do things like clean dishes or do design work on the computer or feed Liam his lunch.  And those things aren’t fun to a seven year old boy.  I’ve been trying; we’ve been watching a LOT of movies.  So far today it’s been Shrek 2, Wallace and Gromitt: The Curse of the Wererabbit and War of the Worlds.  I’m just unsure what else to do.  I have different activities we can go do, but I don’t want to use all the aces in the first week or two, you know?

Plus, he’s been hungry ALL THE TIME. One hour after breakfast, he wants a snack.  It’s not long after that he starts bugging me about when lunch is.  Barely an hour after lunch and he wants more.  An hour later, is it snack time yet?  Before I know it, he’s asking what we’re having for dinner.  DEAR LORD.  There isn’t enough food in the world for this child.  At this rate, we’ll be out of food in a week and we just did a huge shopping trip over the weekend. I made sure we had plenty of sensible snack-fare on hand such as fresh fruit, animal crackers, goldfish, yogurt, apple juice, etc.  And he eats all of that and more every day.  I’ve never seen the like.

I’m a little bored too, to be honest.  I admit to having been quite spoiled recently, being over at NewFriend’s house a lot of the time.  But the poor thing just had a baby a week ago.  She’s got her own fish to fry, what with her own child home from school and crawling the walls as well as a toddler who is going through some fine terrible twos.  And before you mention it, I have offered to have her son come over here so that he and Harry can play together and get out of her hair.  It’s a situation which would be greatly beneficial to both of us because she wouldn’t have to hear him complain about how bored he is and Harry would have someone to play with and wouldn’t spend all his time driving me up the wall.  So far, she hasn’t taken me up on it, and I haven’t wanted to pester her about it.  But I may just end up giving her a call before the week is through and try to set something up.  Because holy moses, this child is driving me crazy.

And it’s times like this that I’m SO glad Harry goes to a year-round school.  If I had three months stretching in front of me like a death sentence, I might not be responsible for what I do.  That’s all I’m sayin’.
