So last night we tagged along with our friends to go watch fireworks. Normally, we have that “secret spot” I mentioned yesterday that we can slip in and out of without much trouble and still see a decent show. But that’s the show over at Rancho San Rafael park and apparently, it doesn’t hold a candle to the show over at Victorian Square in Sparks. You only live once, right? So we headed down there and found a parking spot clear at the top of the parking garage at the Nugget. But OtherFriend had claimed a dang good spot for us to watch the show from. And in the meantime, there was plenty of things to do to keep the kiddos occupied.
There was the fountain in front of the movie theater for the kids to run in and cool off. Shoot, I almost wanted to run in there myself. It was well into the 100’s here yesterday (will be hotter today) and at 7:30-8:00 it was still pretty hot. They also had carnival style rides that the older kids went on while we tried not to watch (those things make me dizzy!). They had drinks for sale for about $4 each which was absurd. Kile just walked over to a 7-Eleven and got a Big Gulp. Now that’s using your noggin. The mood was very festive and I’m glad we went. There was just A LOT of people there and I don’t do so well in crowds. Still, I knew the show would be worth it so I did my best to turn a blind eye to the madness. And I was heartily teased the rest of the night for being so introverted too. Never show weakness, I tell ya! They’re vultures!
The show started later than I expected it would. It was after 10pm before we saw a single firework. It was worth the wait though. The show was unlike any other I’ve ever seen. They shot fireworks off of the two towers of the Nugget and bigger fireworks from between the towers. Our seats were so good that I swear I had a crick in my neck afterward from looking up for a good half hour. I had Liam up on my lap to watch his first fireworks show. He was mesmerized by the colorful explosions, though he didn’t care for the loud cheering. Isn’t that funny? I thought some of the louder “booms” would scare him, but it was the cheering from us and the crowds around us that made him cry. Of course, he’d cry for a nanosecond and then go back to staring at the fireworks. It was just adorable, watching him enjoy the show. I told him it was all for him and his first birthday (NOOOO!) but I’m not sure if he believed me or not.
Getting home was… interesting. Since we were on the roof of the parking garage, we had to wait a LONG time for the line of cars to get moving so we could actually LEAVE. It was after 11 (and getting closer to 12) before left the parking garage and then we had to find some gas for the van. But once we got that squared away, it was home we went and we got the boys to bed. So far, at almost 9 in the morning, Liam and I are the only ones awake (well, the dogs are up too but they don’t count). Pansies.
