So you all remember when Liam was born and he weighed only 4lbs 15ounces? I remember the way my jaw dropped when I first learned that little tidbit. But I felt that surely once he got nursing he would bulk up just like his big brother did. Harry could have won a baby sumo wrestling contest HANDS DOWN by the time he was a year old. But then, Liam wouldn’t nurse. So I pumped. Still the same milk, right? And for a while, it looked like it was working. From 3-5 months, Liam was a chunk in the grand tradition of chunks everywhere. Then… things started to change.
4months= weight: 17lbs 2oz (90-95th percentile), height: 25inches (50th percentile)
6months= weight: 19lbs 8oz (75th percentile), height: 26.5 inches (50th percentile)
9months= weight: 20lbs 4oz (50th percentile), height: 28 inches (50th percentile)
12months= weight: 20lbs 4oz (10-25th percentile), height: 28.5 inches (10-25th percentile)
Okay, do you see what’s wrong with this picture? Cuz I sure do. It wouldn’t be so bad if it were following trend. If, like his height for the first three measurements up there, he remained in the same percentile bracket throughout (yes, even 25th percentile). But no, his weight dropped from 90-95th percentile at 4months to 10-25th percentile at 12months. THAT’S NOT RIGHT, YA’LL. Plus, you know, he gained NOTHING in the three months since his last appointment. Okay, okay, he’s been moving around like a madman on crack lately and I have a heck of a time getting him to stay still for a diaper change much less anything else. But his height? Shouldn’t his height have remained constant? And to drop from 95th percentile to 10th percentile in 8 months? Considering in that time he’s been taken off breastmilk and put onto soy formula and he should have been eating more jarred and table foods and he’s just NOT… well, I feel like Mother of the Friggin’ Year.
We’d been giving him Walmart generic soy formula because it is inexpensive (call CPS now) but the pediatrician told us to switch him to a stage 2 “advance” style soy formula for the extra nutritional and fat content. And that we would need to keep him on that until at least two years old since cartons of soy milk don’t contain much in the way of fat. And, of course, Walmart doesn’t make a stage 2 “advance” style soy formula so we’re going to have to pay out the nose for Similac or Enfamil. This is, of course, assuming we can even find such a product in our podunk town. I’m thinking I may have to find someplace online that I can order from in semi-bulk and save money as well as headaches caused by driving from store to store trying to find this stuff.
We go back in three months. If he hasn’t gained a goodly amount by then? Testing. To see if he has another sort of food allergy, specifically celiac’s disease, which could be hampering his weight-gain. GAH.
So after all that, the shots were NOTHING.
