We have the coolest friends

by Marilyn on July 16, 2007

I know you’ve all heard me talk about NewFriend and OtherFriend here on this blog.  Having friends that actually live nearby is a huge deal to me as I’ve spent most of my married life feeling somewhat cut off from the rest of humanity.  If it weren’t for the internet, I would have been cut off altogether (and bored, VERY bored).  I’m so lucky to have these guys.  They’re just the sort of friends we have wanted to have.  Same religious views as us (we all go to church together on Sundays) but not afraid to party it up a little bit.  A lot of our more Christian friends are the sorts that tend towards prohibition, for example.  Whereas with these new friends, we’re not afraid to dive into the wine or margaritas (or, in the case of Saturday night, shots of tequila).  They can also be a rather salty group, telling dirty stories to rival all dirty stories.  And whenever we all get together I laugh.  I laugh as hard as I have in the last several years.  It’s fun to just HAVE FUN again, you know?

You already know we went to the drive in together with our pals on Friday.  Saturday night, we were invited over to play games (and drink, as it happened).  We played the women against the men and it was “Guesstures” which is sort of like charades.  I’m no good at charades, but I had fun anyhow.  The children all stayed up way too late and had way too much sugar and we were all a little bleary eyed at church the next day.  But it was worth it.  We women get along and the men get along too.  Our kids have a great time playing together and NewFriend’s house is one of the few places where Liam’s separation anxiety doesn’t get the better of him.  NewFriend’s husband has been known to lurk on this blog and post comments under the name “Annonymous Blogger” even though I know exactly who he is whenever he posts (hello, IP address!) and we kid each other about it regularly.  We’ve nicknamed OtherFriend’s baby “Bam Bam” after the kid on “The Flintstones” because he tends to be a little on the unintentional rough side, but he and Liam still enjoy each other.  NewFriend’s nearly-2-year-old boy holds a special place in my heart and feels comfortable enough with me to fall asleep on my lap.

It’s just about the best it could be in the friend department.  And I’ve waited so long for this.
