Meta Monday

by Marilyn on December 3, 2007

Ahh… two whole days where I didn’t have to post a blessed thing.  I wasn’t planning on taking a short blogging break but I did and it was fabulous.  Of course, I didn’t take a break from anything else.  We did a LOT of shopping this weekend.  The result is Christmas shopping is 90% done (depending on who you ask).  The other result is sore legs and backs from all the walking.  And I went to Walmart more times than I care to admit.  Soreness doesn’t make Monday mornings any easier, I’ve found out.  It was very hard to get up this morning and I’m counting the minutes until Liam takes a nap so that I can take a nap too.

So the meta-ness I spoke of in the title:  As you’ll notice, Kile didn’t post on Friday like I said he might.  I pointed this out to him and he felt bad, he simply forgot.  I think I’ll continue to remind him of it so he continues to feel guilty.  Because I’m a good wife like that.  And maybe he’ll feel bad enough that he’ll do a post anyhow, even though November and NaBloPoMo is over.

Speaking of, I saw the prizes were awarded last night.  And while myself not winning anything wasn’t surprising (you have been paying attention, haven’t you?), I was surprised that on a cursory glance at the list, I didn’t recognize any blogs that won anything.  Which isn’t to say that someone I read didn’t win something.  It was 11:30 at night and I was just glancing at the list quickly.  But I was just amazed, that out of 60+ winners, I didn’t recognize anyone.  It’s not like I’m a blogging newbie and don’t know of a lot of blogs.  And it’s not like I’m one of those people who think only the old school bloggers are worth reading.  But it just made me realize that there are a LOT of blogs out there right now.  And I’m a little sad that I’m not reading more of them than I am.

Luckily, Google Reader has this handy “recommended feeds” listing that updates fairly often.  It takes your current subscriptions into account and recommends you blogs that it thinks you might also enjoy.  So I’ve subscribed to several new blogs through that.  Though I have to check and make sure the blog has a “full feed” instead of the partial thing.  I CANNOT STAND PARTIAL FEEDS.   I only read maybe three blogs that have partial feeds at the moment.  Because I enjoy what these people post so much that it’s worth the extra effort (snort) of clicking through to the site.  But on a new blog that I haven’t read before?  NOT GONNA HAPPEN.   I’m far too lazy to click through until I fall in love.  I realize this means I’m missing out on a lot of great sites because of this, but I cannot help the way I am.  When I did subscribe to more partial feeds (I recently unsubscribed to a lot of blogs), I RARELY ever clicked through to read the posts.  If it’s a blog that updates only occasionally, it also doesn’t bother me as much.  But if someone is updating daily or several times a week, that’s too much.

I wish there was a way we could chose how we wish to view our feeds.  I realize that would defeat the purpose of partial feeds in the first place, but I’m really sad that there are some great sites out there that have them and that I am pretty sure I would enjoy if they just had full feeds.  It’s not a matter of commenting for me.  I’m a lurker by nature.  If I want to comment, I will click through and comment.  Having to click through to the site just to read the post doesn’t make me any more likely to comment.  But a lot of people are worried about people stealing their work to post on their own blogs or want people to come to their site to get ad views.  And maybe, some people don’t realize that how to switch to full feeds.  Still.  I hate that there has to be partial feeds at all.  Where’s the blogging love, I ask you?

Anyhow.  Enough of that meta nonsense.  On with the show.  Or, in my case, on with the nap.

I HATE partial feeds, too! The cynical side of me thinks they are just blogging for the ad revenue if they require it. It lessens my desire to click through even further.

Amen to that! I despise partial feeds. I love reading in my feedreader, and I hate being FORCED to click through to the blog itself to finish the rest of the blog. I would say that 95% of the time, I just stop reading. Which actually means I’m LESS likely to comment. I comment pretty frequently on a wide variety of blogs. And those comments almost always are sparked by something near the end of the blog post or the post in full. So if I don’t read the whole thing, I’m probably not going to have anything to say. It definitely seems to me that if people are choosing partial feeds in order to increase page hits or comments, it’s backfiring more than it’s helping.

I hate partial feeds also. I like to browse while I’m at lunch but the company computers are kind of picky of where we can go etc. If the whole feed it there I do get to read it and maybe go back when I get home to comment if I have anything to say.. I know, work and all…I only do it at lunch..and sometimes I just don’t want to click on through to read the rest. Lazy as I am

I started out with partial feeds and realized how much I hate them, so I switched.
Even worse than partials? Titles only! GRRR….I NEVER stick to those sites. At least with partial, you have a prayer of getting me to read you.
