I am a horrible, horrible pet owner.
I perpetrated the sin of laziness with Pup. We got her last February and we kept saying, “Soon” when it came to the question of getting her spayed. We’ll do it soon. When we have money. Well, we never did have money. I mean, we had it, but not much extra. If we had really wanted to, though, we would have made it work. But no, we put it off. I don’t know why we felt like we had TIME with this, but there you have it. It was a sin. And I’m a horrible, horrible pet owner.
We’ve noticed Pup giving extra attention to her lady bits the last couple of days but brushed it off. These dogs can be disgusting creatures and Beetoe (who was spayed a million years ago when she was a puppy and when we were still good pet owners) does it all the time. So whatever, right? Then I noticed her lady bits were looking rather, er, large. And I remembered, for a moment, that she turned one year old at the beginning of the month. And I immediately looked up “rat terrier heat” on Google.
And yeah, I think we’re screwed.
The timing is IMPECCABLE. If I didn’t know better, I’d say she planned this. Because it’s December and there is no money in December. We had also actually been planning to get her spayed after the holidays. Yes, along with everything else we’re doing after the holidays. Mere weeks away. But no. And can I just say? After I saw this site, I sort panicked. 21 days?? Underwear with a maxi pad?? DIAPERS?? Oh, HELL no. It’s Christmas, for crying out loud. I don’t have time for this!!
Of course, I can hear you all through my monitor right now. “If you don’t have time for this, you should have just gotten her spayed earlier.” Yeah, well. Shut up. I know that NOW. And if we wanna get technical, I knew that THEN too. But I ignored it. And now look at me. I have a dog who will be going into heat probably minutes from now and presents to wrap and cookies to bake and cards to address…
It ain’t fair. That’s all I’m saying.

Oh no! I’ve never experienced a dog in heat, but I’ve experienced many a cat in heat and…yikes. I hope it won’t be too bad. Also, I must not have been paying attention, because I didn’t realize your puppy was a rat terrier. I have a three-year-old (male) rat terrier, whom I utterly adore. RTs are awesome dogs…although the puppy stage is enough to make you pull your hair out.
