My daughters bday is the 17th. She's just turned 10 and we always try hard to do a big bash for her - this year it was just our family of 5 but we had a special mommy-made cake, baloons, and a ton of gifts in princess and birthday paper. We don't give a ton of gifts at Christmas anyway so it works out well. My bday is the day after Christmas and I insist on a special breakfast (berries bananas and cream, croissants, and mimosa's) and a special dinner (filet mignon!). I don't care about the gifts now, but I did when I was a kid, and I remember many years feeling like my bday didn't count. Happy Belated to you!

My birthday is near Thanksgiving, my husband's and daughter's are in mid-December, and my son's in mid-January. I agree with your points: separate the gifts. Recognize the day on the day if possible. The tree? We usually put it up on or right after the birthdays. To protect our sanity, we plan and we shop ahead. If we didn't, we'd go broke by February.
