Why can’t all weekends be like that??

by Marilyn on December 17, 2007

You know, I just had a really rather fabulous weekend.  I wasn’t really expecting it to be fabulous either, which is why I guess it was as nice as it was.  Sometimes the best times come when you least expect them.  We’ve been having budget issues this month (when don’t we, really?) and had been expecting a few payments to go through that haven’t yet and since this weekend was the last practical weekend to go shopping for Christmas (seriously, who is planning to hit the malls next weekend?  SURELY NOT ME), some of our plans were thrown off.  However, I was surprised with a rather generous donation of $ from Kile’s parents for my birthday (letter arrived a little late so I didn’t get it until Saturday) and combined with the $ from my parents for my birthday, I was able to do a little shopping.  I had to resist using it for Christmas presents though, since Kile said that would be silly to use my birthday money to buy presents for other people.  But I will admit it felt odd. I did, however, find these beauties at Target:

YES!  I finally got a pair of boots to replace my former beloved pink boots.  And, dare I say it, these boots are better?  The lining is a lot more plush, the boot is more fitted (so less “clumping” around which Kile hates) and the soles are treaded so there will be less likelihood of me falling on my ass.   Bonus!  Plus, they’re brown and not pink.  While I like pink and loved my pink boots, it will be nice to have a more neutral color to work with.   And perhaps the best part of all is that they only cost $20, whereas my pink boots had initially cost $35 and every other boot I’ve looked at recently has been about $30 at the very least.  Unless you count those $13 boots at Walmart but those were the epitome of cheap.

We also went out to brunch after church yesterday at Mimi’s Cafe and I had my beloved Triple Berry Stuffed French Toast.  That stuff is the food of gods, I swear to you.  We shared our food with Liam and he was particularly partial to pieces of Kile’s blueberry muffin and the blueberries off the top of my french toast.  That child has a major thing for blueberries.  So that was a lot of fun because we haven’t been there for ages.  Thank goodness for birthday money, right?

We even finished off the afternoon by stopping by Blockbuster and renting “Ratatouille” and “Sicko”.   We watched the cartoon yesterday which both of the kids just loved.  It was very cute and I’m sure we’ll be having an encore performance at some point today.  Haven’t watched “Sicko” yet because I was busy watching “Survivor:China” last night and blogging it.  But maybe tonight, if nothing reality TV oriented is on.  I’m anxious to see it, because I’ve heard so much about it.

Saturday wasn’t bad either.  We had a lazier sort of day around home and left in the evening to go do a little shopping.  We were also going to an open house at Kile’s boss’ house and he lives clear out at the end of Spanish Springs which is pretty much hell and gone from where we live.  So we did the shopping nearer to where this guy lives and then caught some dinner at Straw Hat Pizza before heading over.  I didn’t even know Straw Hat Pizza was still around but it is and this one is seriously awesome.  They had TVs in each of the booths!  And Spongebob was on, so the boys were happy.  The pizza tasted great, the service was fantastic and the place was just hopping with people out doing Christmas shopping.  It was a really fun atmosphere and I hope we get to go back soon.  The open house was fun too, though I think Harry was a little bored.  There weren’t any other children there.  But he did enjoy the snacks that had been laid out and even was introduced to petit fours, which he thought would be a truffle and was a little surprised when he took a bite.  These people have a magnificent house and it made all of us long for the day when we’ll be able to upgrade like that.  Even Harry was impressed and he told us, “Whoever built this house did a really good job.”  You know, as opposed to our house.   Heh.

Kile made another batch of fudge last night, as well as some seriously awesome peanut brittle.  The presents are all wrapped and the ones that need to be shipped were packed in boxes and are currently in the back of Kile’s van.  I’m hoping he has a chance to mail them today because I sure would hate for the gifts to arrive late.  But for the most part, it’s out of my hands and all I need to worry about is my own family.  I have a few more gifts I’d like to get for the boys and for Kile that I’ll have to try to do sometime this week.  I hate going out during the week and avoid it if I can but since I refuse to go shopping next weekend, I think I’m out of options here.  But hey, I’ll make it work.  I always do.

So how was your weekend?
