Antibodies and the Return of the Puny Runt

by Marilyn on January 8, 2008

So I haven’t posted about this because I waiting until I got the appointment set up with the perinatologist but as they haven’t called yet and I had an appointment with my OB today, I’m gonna tell you all anyhow.  I had my glucose test done back on December 27, the day before we had our 3D ultrasound.  I had some other blood tests done the same day, one of which was to check out this whole antibodies thing.  Remember that?  Apparently that time the antibodies only showed up in a very small amount.  So small that at a 1:1 ratio, the perinatologist my OB spoke to said it must have been a lab error and to test me again.

Well, I got my blood drawn again but then the lab lost the samples (gah) and by the time I went in to see the doctor again, she said to hold off on going back for a retest until I did my glucose test.  Sounds peachy.  Well, last Wednesday as we were driving home from Elko, I got a call on my cell phone from my OB.  The glucose test came back fine but those antibodies were back.  And they brought friends, apparently, since the ratio was now 1:16.  Which, I’ve tried to stay away from Google some on this but what I do know is that increasing numbers are not really a good thing.

So they’re sending me to a perinatologist.  They were supposed to have called me sometime since last Wednesday to set up an appointment.  As of this morning, I’d gotten no call.  So when I told my OB that, she said she’d give them another call, see what’s up.  She played it off, as if it was a “just in case” sort of thing.  I’ll get more blood tests and an ultrasound or two and that should be that.  Right.  Well, I’ll reserve judgment until I get some more information.  I’m sure you understand.

In other news, I go back to the OB in 3 weeks, then 2 weeks after that.  At 34 weeks, we’ll start the twice-weekly non-stress tests and ultrasounds.  Wee!  So we’re getting down to it here, people.  Oh, and I gained 8 pounds this last month. GAH.  My doctor said she wasn’t going to hold that against me as she gained 8 pounds last month too and she’s not even pregnant.  We both blamed the fudge before both of us sweared that we’d take it easy from here on out.   Well, maybe she swore more than I did.  I have a baby with a mean sweet-tooth here.  I need cookies.  I fear for my well-being without them.  Oh, and ice-cream too.  Too bad fudge season is over  That stuff rocked.

Anyhow, after that appointment (where I somehow forgot to mention the whole carpal tunnel thing), we had lunch and then headed over for Liam’s 18 month wellcheck.  Yay for appointment day!  (I won’t even go into what a pain in the arse it was getting out this morning.  Powdery snow + wind = BAD.  Just trust me there.)  Anyhow, Liam gained just over 2 pounds in the last three months.  That bumped him up from the 20th percentile for weight to the 30th percentile.  His head is also still ginormous at the 60th percentile.  However, his length didn’t budge an inch.  Or even HALF an inch.  He is the exact same length he was at his last appointment, the little puny runt.  So three months ago he was the 30th percentile for length and now he’s 10-15th percentile.  GAH.

Oh, and he’s a little speech delayed too.  Of course, we were expecting that.  The questionnaire we had to fill out asked about how many word combinations he’s using and such.  Uh… word combinations?  Riiight.  But the doctor isn’t too concerned.  He’ll check up at his 2 year appointment this summer and hopefully he will have progressed by then.  Until then, no worrying.  Harry didn’t really start talking until he was three, so maybe it runs in the family.  Maybe Evelyn will end up showing both her brothers how it’s done, huh?

So that’s been my day.  How about yours?
