Getting her head examined

Posted on January 13th, 2008

So yesterday was the Big Perinatologist Appointment.  Kile was annoyed that small children weren’t allowed in the office, because that meant that HE couldn’t be in the office.  Rather, he would have to watch the kiddos while I got to have an ultrasound and get the skinny on what’s up with this kid.  Plus, you know, he was worried.  So he already wasn’t in a fabulous mood, and when we got there, there was some kerfluffle about our copay.  See, our insurance states that we pay one $40 copay that should cover our maternal care until we are admitted to the hospital (and then we need to pay our hospital copay).  He felt that $40 should cover the perinatologist, the receptionist argued that it didn’t because they are considered a specialist.  GAH.  So he left and then the lady gave me back my Visa check card telling me that she didn’t need that this time.  So make from that what you will.

I wasn’t the only person there, a couple showed up shortly after us and were apparently from out of town, hence the weekend appointment.  I didn’t have to wait too long, however, until the sonogram lady called me back.  Her name was Sara and she was very nice.  I got to sit in a very cushy ultrasound chair and chat with her while she took measurements of the baby and told me what she was doing (most of the time).  There was a nice big screen on the wall so I could watch what she was doing.  Apparently, the big question here was these certain head measurements.  Best I can tell, they would check the blood flow in the head and then measure the heart rate.  If the “peaks” of the heart rate stayed under a certain number, that was a good thing.  After she finished, she called in the doctor and he did the measurements again and apparently got better measurements than she had gotten which is good.

So far?  Evelyn looks great.  She’s right on the curve where she’s supposed to be.  They want me back in two weeks for another one of these scans and they can see if she’s staying good or worsening.  If in the next several weeks, she worsens, we can consider a transfusion within the uterus.  I didn’t ask how that’d be done because I’m simply hoping it won’t be an issue.  They’ll see me until about 35 weeks.  If that point, she looks as though she’s getting anemic, they’ll consider doing the c-section early.  If she looks fine, we’ll go ahead with the c-section date as scheduled (which it should be sometime in the next several weeks or so).

That’s the story.  It was a pretty mellow perinatologist appointment, I’m sure.  The complimentary magazine they gave me at check-in talked a lot about premature babies and bedrest, two issues that as of yet aren’t issues (and I doubt bedrest ever will be).  So I know I’m pretty lucky.  More importantly, I have a lot of faith that everything will be just fine in the end.  That’s how I get through, you know.
