Can this be considered nesting? (please?)

by Marilyn on January 17, 2008

I’m not much of a house-cleaner.  Those of you who have been reading along for the last several years know this.  Remember that time I took a picture of my kitchen sink?  I wish I could say that it didn’t look an awful lot like that today too, but that would be a lie.  I hate cleaning.  I love having a clean house, but not enough to actually do anything about it.  I prefer to keep things clean rather than be messy and clean up later.  Unfortunately, the people who share this house with me would rather be messy.  So you see where we have a problem.

I guess it should come as no surprise then, that when I’m nesting it’s not so much in a “scrub the baseboards” sort of way, but more in a “we must have everything we need in place” sort of way.  And acquiring what we need often takes money.  And my husband is not a big fan of spending the money, even if it’s something we need.  It can be very frustrating to have a sensible purchase put off time and time again.  I hate to say that I’ve actually gotten used to it over the years.

But right now?  There’s some things we need.  In no particular order:

  • new king sized bed
  • microwave
  • double stroller
  • ginormous gate
  • infant car seat
  • crib mattress (and possibly a crib)

GAH, right?  The bed is a no-brainer.  You’ve heard me bitch about my bed over and over here.  (And, dear god, that post was written almost three years ago.)  The new bed need is undeniable.  Lucky for us, Sam’s Club has some very fabulous mattresses for sale and we can get the whole king set for about $850.  That doesn’t cover, of course, sheets and blankets and all that stuff we’d need since we currently have a queen.  BUT STILL.  We need the bed.  BADLY.  Plus, the baby will probably sleep with us and the extra room would be nice.  We’re not so naive as to expect that Liam might not want to crawl in with us a time or two and while the current bed could conceivably handle both of us and a baby, it could not handle both of us, a baby and a toddler.

The microwave is a new development.  Yesterday, I was trying to warm up some lunch in the microwave and it buzzed a lot but did no heating.  Kile confirmed last night what I already knew: the microwave is shot.  He’s in no hurry to procure a new one but then HE ISN’T HERE ALL DAY.  That’s how food gets made here during the day.  He said I could use the oven.  RIIIGHT.  Fat chance.  So a new microwave is a must-have.  SOON.  What do people DO without microwaves?  It’s a frightening thought.

Double stroller… well, that has been well documented on this here website.  And like the king sized bed, it has been decided (though it must be noted I was not included in this decision) that it will be purchased with our tax-return dollars.  HOWEVER, last night I saw on Craig’s List (which I’ve been watching like a hawk lately) one of the three strollers I had mentioned in my stroller post up for sale.   For a mere $100!  I sent an email right away but haven’t heard back yet so who knows.  But shoot, it’s worth a shot, right?  That would SO ROCK.

Car seat… second verse, same as the first.  Tax-return money.  I’m pretty sure we’re going to get a Graco SafeSeat here.  The longer she can stay in that, the longer Liam can stay in the Britax Blvd and the longer until we’ll need to buy another seat for Liam to use.  Plus, you know, it’s SAFE and all.  :)  I have my eye on one online that’s on sale for $99.  Bargain!

We need a ginormous gate to cover the 7 foot opening from our living room into our kitchen.  Liam is getting more inventive with his exploring and since I can’t see the majority of the kitchen from the living room, I would feel better just keeping him out of there altogether.  Unfortunately, the only gate we’ve found that can even do the job is $100 and while it’s not entirely unreasonable, it’s a fair amount of cash.  So it has been put off and put off.  I can’t tell you how many times we’ve gone to Babies R Us to look at the gate on the shelf only to leave empty handed.  Yeah, Kile hates spending money, remember?

Someone has kindly offered us their crib to use for Evelyn when she arrives but we will still need a mattress to go with it.  Luckily, this isn’t a very spendy purchase and is just a “go ahead and buy it” sort of thing.  No rush, as the child will almost definitely be sleeping with us for a good while.  Still, it’d be nice to have this stuff in place before she makes her grand entrance.

Maybe, just maybe, when all these items are finally procured and in my hot little hands, I might actually want to clean something to satisfy my nesting needs.  HA!  I know, that was a good one wasn’t it?
