You Need to Read - January 19

by Marilyn on January 19, 2008

It’s another Saturday morning and I feel the stupor that can only be associated with a weekend morning.  I believe this calls for coffee.  Of course, I’m in the middle of arguing with my oldest child whether or not coffee is safe to drink during pregnancy.  He’s quite the strict taskmaster, that one.  I told him it was either coffee or me asleep in my pancakes.  Since when does an 8 year old know what is safe and what isn’t during pregnancy?  Does he get some sort of sick pleasure out of busting my chops?  That’s probably it.

Anyhow, I’ve got a great bunch of links for you this week (when don’t I have a great bunch of links though?).  So without further babbling from me about how groggy I feel or how tasty my pancakes truly are, I give you the links:

  • A thousand words” from No Pasa Nada. I will admit, it was the picture that first reached inside my chest, grabbed my heart and gave it a tight SQUEEZE.  If someone isn’t sure they want to have a child, a picture like that will decide it for them time and time again. EASILY.
  • To the mama without the baby” from sweet | salty.  I suppose it’s unfortunate that this is the topic which Kate speaks of that really resonates, but on the other hand, how helpful have some of her posts about grieving been to mothers these last six months or so?  Her words, they speak the truth with a calm, knowing comfort.  It’s like bundling underneath a warm blanket on a rainy day.
  • Right to Choose… to Have the Baby” from Girl’s Gone Child. This is a very tough subject to talk or even write about.  But to her credit, I think she nailed it.  Her views might not match yours, but you have to admit she presents an interesting perspective.
  • Seats on a plane” from Kristin Darguzas at ParentDish.  I’m telling you, I care WAY too much about this subject.  And no, you will never be able to convince me that it is okay to disregard people behind you on a crowded plane just to give yourself a few more inches of space.
  • Three Key Bloggity People” from Loralee’s Looney Tunes.  I love stories about how people started blogging and Loralee’s post may be my favorite of them all.  I love her honesty and the willingness to expose herself to us, her loyal readers.  You’ve come a long way, baby.
  • Let them eat cake” from Rockstar Mommy.  Repercussions or no, this was a great post to get to read.  I love to hear when a child (and in this case, an entire family) gets to broaden their eating horizons and indulge in that greatest of American treats: pizza.
  • Rice, Rice Baby” from Playgroups are No Place For Children.  OMG, Walmart has done this to me so many times.  I’ve almost come to expect them to be out of simple products whenever I go to get groceries.  But rice cereal?  SERIOUSLY?
  • Meet Mimiclaus” from Bethiclaus.  I knew her time was growing short and was suspicious when she hadn’t posted in quite a while.  Therefore, I was very pleased to see this post from her, officially announcing the arrival of her daughter.  Yay for Bethiclaus!
  • WordPress Plugin Standards” from Blogging Pro. This is probably of no interest to anyone but myself, but I love the idea of there being standards for plugin authors.  AMEN to not hiding menu items.  What?  Oh, if you didn’t know by now that I’m a giant nerd then you haven’t been paying enough attention.
  • Whole or in Part” from Jurgen Nation.  Wow.  Simply… wow.  This took enormous guts to post and I think gives such fantastic insight into what her thought process was and is like.  She doesn’t need judging, she needs support and understanding.  I applaud her for her honesty.  And I’m so glad she failed.
  • Lunch Bunch Dropout” from amalah.   I started off the post saying, “Oh no, WHY?” and ended saying “You go, girl.”  Sometimes it can be hard to follow our instincts, but I’m sure glad she did and I am sure it is for the best.  And I feel quite outraged for her, to be honest.
  • Thank you for making me feel safe enough to actually hit ‘publish’ on this one” from Joy Unexpected.  Again with the incredible honesty!  Y has been through it, that much is true.  I hope she can feel better and feel healthier soon, because dang, does she ever deserve it.  We love you, Y!
  • Every day I Write The Book” from leahpeah.  I think I’m drawn to the “honesty posts” this week, what do you think?  I also related so much with this particular post as a lot of the feelings she talks are things I’ve felt as well.  Having a schedule set, I’m sure that would help loads with the guilt. Good luck, Leah.
  • There Are No Controls Left” from Schmutzie.  I can’t imagine what it must be like, to have your choices taken from you.  Sometimes, it’s not just the choice but the ability to MAKE that choice.

There you have it, folks.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Sorry my friend, but a new study from the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology is all over the news today for stating that 2 cups of coffee per day doubles risk of miscarriage. Score one for the 8 year old. In your defence though, I suspect that this is a much bigger issue for people in their first trimester.
