Impending fortune

by Marilyn on February 7, 2008

According to all signs (the IRS, our bank, etc), our tax refund is going to be direct deposited sometime either late tonight or tomorrow.  Now, if you’ve been hanging around here at all then you know that there are Big Plans for this refund.  There always is, it seems.  We’ll see what all actually gets done, of course, but I’m figuring the least I’ll see out of this is a) a new bad at long, long, LONG last and b) an infant car seat for our new little bundle of joy.  I’m also going to make a bold prediction that we could also see a new Wii and/or Guitar Hero or Rock Band game.  Both have been discussed at length and scoped out at our local Sam’s Club.  I imagine, of course, a great deal of the money will be shuffled away into savings.  At least, one can hope.  But, then again, this is us we’re talking about.  Saving money has never been a strong suit.

You know how all those people who are actually good with money say that you shouldn’t have a tax refund?  That it’s unfair for the government to get to keep our money interest free for us?  That it’s better to only get a small refund or end up owing?

Yeah.  No.

We tried that.  And it didn’t go so well, if I recall.  Because instead of saving the extra money we had each month, it just got absorbed into the budget and spent.  So when tax time rolled around… we were sorta screwed.  So we vowed to never try that particular little experiment again.  Plus, we really like having the “windfall” befall us every late winter/early spring.  We’re basically paying the government to save our money for us, since we can’t be depended on to do it ourselves.  Pathetic, aren’t we?

Still, I’m way psyched about the refund.  And, should the Senate decide that we get to have it after all, I’m also psyched for the rebate.  (I don’t know, that whole thing still really confuses me.  Just let me know if I get a check or not, kay?) Believe it or not, I already have that money all planned out. Since we will have our minivan paid off this summer, I’m hoping to use some of that extra money one month plus my portion of the rebate to get myself a new laptop.

Oh yeah.

So, basically, the fun (should) start this weekend.  And if you don’t think getting a new bed is fun, then you have never seen nor slept on my old bed.  I’m looking so forward to this one major purchase that I’m liable to weep with joy when I finally lay in it for the first time.  Naturally, this major purchase will come with sheets, pillows, blankets, etc.  Because we have nothing for a king sized bed.  But do I care?  NO.  It’s time we got new sheets anyway.  Our (originally colored) cream flannel sheets are starting to look rather gray, after all.  We won’t even talk about what Kile has done to his pillowcases.
OMG, I’m so excited.
