We have a small apartment and a big baby so we had to move him to his crib early. It's set up about 2 feet away from my side of the bed, so we can look at each other through the bars. i nurse/rock him back to sleep, then move him over after a few minutes. Some nights it doesn't work so well (like last night) and we all sleep together, but most nights we all like our own space, in the same room. I have the mini and the regular size.
