You Need to Read - August 9

by Marilyn on August 9, 2008

Yawn.  It’s a rough morning, yo.  Hubs and I shared a bottle of “sustainable red” last night for our anniversary and I have one of those totally AWESOME wine headaches this morning.  You know, if by AWESOME you mean TOTALLY SUCKASS.  Which, of course, I do.  And here it is, nearly 10 am and it’s just me and Liam awake.  I’m gonna have to go rattle some blankets, methinks.  (Doesn’t help that I wake to the news that Bernie Mac is dead.)  Well, on THAT happy note, let’s get to this week’s posts, shall we?  As opposed to my SUCKASS headache, these links are truly and honestly awesome so you better check them out:

  • You Got A Problem With My Boobies, PUNK? from Her Bad Mother.  Leave it to Catherine to show up on my list AGAIN this week.  And while she is trying to take a much needed break from the blogosphere in order to recharge her juices, she had to share this moment of outrage with us.  And I’m outraged for her and for me and for all women who are just trying their best to be the best mothers they can be.
  • This is Lee from Running Stitch.  This is important: You have to read this post about this amazing young man and if you can help, please do.  Brit doesn’t ever ask for much, I can attest to that.  But when she DOES ask, you can bet that it’s a very worthy request.
  • Internet Fame is for the Nerds: Post-BlogHer Identity from Velveteen Mind.  Megan really put on Big Girl Panties (in an totally awesome way) this week.  She called it what it is and I really and truly respect her for that.  And, like it or not, she’s a total Internet Rockstar.  And I will forever adore her for reminding everyone that all of us, even the “big names” go home to dirty diapers and electric bills.
  • thursday from matt, liz and madeline.  Each post is like a heartbreak from Matt.  I take special interest in his story, as Madeline’s birthday falls so close to Evie’s.  This post was exceptionally beautiful, a tribute to his wife and to his daughter.  Growing up is hard on us parents.  And YES, the more independence they get, the less we have.  SO TRUE.
  • Incredulous Relief from better now.  I have been riveted to Kristen’s story of a roadtrip gone wrong.  Her telling of it, bit by bit, uncertainly, has been heartbreaking in and of itself.  Because she obviously is upset with herself.  Makes me want to give her a hug.
  • No Reply from THE WIND IN YOUR VAGINA.  I think this is the first post I’ve featured from the infamous Black Hockey Jesus.  He’s hysterical, ya’ll.  And his taunting of the Queen of the Blogs is nothing less (or more for that matter) than silly.  (That’s a glowing review, if you couldn’t tell.)  He made me laugh, which counts for a lot around here right now.
  • “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself” from Joy Unexpected.  Y and her family have had SUCH a hard time of it lately.  And reading about her journey in faith has been a priviledge.  I loved this post and I just adore Y.
  • I Yelled At Other People’s Kids and It Was Awesome from The Queen of Shake-Shake.  AWESOME indeed!  I wanted to pump my fist, reading her story.  Calling out other people’s kids has always been a rough issue for me and causes me a great deal of stress.  This could be why sleepovers and birthday parties are bones of contention.  But she was 100% in the right and I only wish I could have been there, cheering her on.
  • Thoughts on BlogHer 08 from blurbomat.com.  I simply had to mention this post becuase this post here was a big deal in the Blog World this week.  It spawned some interesting discussions.  I understood Jon’s meaning in writing it, but respectfully disagree with some of his points.  Have you read it?  What did you think?
  • Greetings to the new brunette from a little pregnant.  Wow, what a difference a few years can make, can it?  I remember so clearly Charlie’s dramatic entrance into the world.  So I guess that makes it all the more wonderful the relatively calm and uneventful entrance of Ben.  And, you know, ADORABLE baby picture.  That HAS to be mentioned!
  • Children get older, I’m getting older, too from Mrs. Flinger.  I read this and pretty much just wanted to cry. I read what she says and I know that she’s right and yet I cannot make the same leap as she does (blogging is still my refuge and my therapy).  But Mrs. Flinger is just so AWESOME that I have to cheer her on as best I can.  Even though I’ll miss her voice in my blog reader.
  • Blog Tip Sharing Project 9: RSS Feeds from Playgroups are No Place For Children.  I probably should have highlighted this LAST Saturday.  Alas, it’s here now and if you ever wondered just what RSS feeds were, why you should care about them, and what the big deal with partial vs. full feeds was, READ THIS.  And bless her for urging people to embrace full feeds.  I cannot say it enough, people: FULL FEEDS = YOUR BLOG BEING READ.  PARTIAL FEEDS = YOUR BLOG BEING SKIPPED.  Simple as that.
  • Which came first: the geek or the blog? from mothergoosemouse.  Julie brings up a very good point here.  Why is blogging immediately assumed to be “geeky”?  I mean, I was at BlogHer and, yes, while there was a degree of geekiness there, for the most part all I saw was a diverse group of women and most of them were pretty darned normal.  Not that geeks aren’t normal, mind you.
  • The “Cancer” that wasn’t cancer from Midwestern Mommy.  And here we have quite possibly the BEST news of the entire week.  IT ISN’T CANCER.  If that isn’t a blessing straight from God, I don’t know what is.  I am so relieved for her and for her family.  WHEW.
  • A letter to my very anal husband who is asleep in the other room from The Bloggess.  HA!  I love the story of the imprint in the butter dish.  I’m pretty sure the Bloggess is a gift from above, sent to make me laugh and giggle when I need it the most.  I hope she didn’t get in too much trouble from the whole thing with the butter.
  • The iPhone 3G as a Blogging Tool - My Review from ProBlogger Blog Tips.  Given that I will be owning my very own iPhone here in a few short weeks, I am finding myeslf increasingly interested in learning what exactly the darn thing can DO.  Apparently?  It can help with the blogging.  SIGN ME UP.

And that’s our week!  As for us, we have no big plans this weekend.  Maybe some sitting around.  Maybe some cleaning.  Perhaps a little coffee drinking.  You know.  Exciting stuff.  Now, I must figure out if I should take ipubprofen for my post-wine headache or if Tylenol is better.  HALP.
