Despite yesterday morning’s indifference, we eventually did get our act together and leave the house.  However we forgot to a) vote and b) pick up my prescription.  Why?  Because I apparently lack a brain and completely forgot.   Every other moment of the day my thoughts swirl around the election but when I leave the house?   NOPE.  What the heck, me?  Knock that off!

We went to the mall first off to attend a Halloween party of sorts being held at the bookstore that my very good friend’s significant other manages.  There were a lot of kids dressed up in costumes there and they had storys and costume contests and games and crafts.  It was actually a lot of fun and I got a kick out of the kids there.  And Liam looked friggin’ adorable in his monkey costume.

Check that belly!

Seriously.

And Harry wasn’t bad either in his spooky costume (sans menacing blade, but whatever).  He actually frightened a few of the little kids there and they wouldn’t stand next to him.  Heh.  Hey, he asked for a scary costume this year!  It’s his own doing!  He’s saving the blood pumping action for The Big Night so at least we were spared that effect.

Spooky Dude

Evie had the best costume of all.  She went as Cute.

Tasty Flower

Can you argue with that?  I didn’t think so.  She grinned at every one who spoke to her.  Even the goth teenagers that happened by thought she was the bee’s knees.

Afterward, we got lunch because by that point it was after 3pm and we were all officially Starving.  Seriously, my knees felt weak.  Someone said “cheeseburger” and drool immediately started pouring down my chin.  I hate getting that hungry before I eat.  Makes me feel hungry the rest of the day, even though I’ve eaten plenty.  I don’t think I ever DIDN’T feel hungry from there on out.  Boo!

We stopped by Best Buy because Kile had some gift cards to use.  We picked up an FM transmitter for the iPod that was half price and also found “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron” on DVD at long, long last.  We HAD to get it because it is quite possibly my most favorite animated movie ever.  We watched it when we got home and I think the kids dug it (minus Harry who went upstairs to watch “Spongebob”).  Meanwhile, I’m an enormous dork who had a hard time not tearing up as I watched it because it’s so Beautiful and Inspiring.

Me = Lame.

Also while at Best Buy, I scoped out the cameras.  A nice guy helped us by pointing out what he thought the best cameras were as well as the best sellers.  I found two cameras that I really liked, both Canons.  One was a souped up point-and-shoot, the Powershot SX10IS.  The other was the Rebel XS DSLR.  Kile was of the mind that I should aim for the DSLR if it’s what I really want.  I’m of the mind that the $200 price difference isn’t be sneezed at and the point-and-shoot would be a good camera to learn techniques on without getting myself “in too deep.”  What do you think?

Added to the dilemma, we stopped by Sam’s Club last to get some milk (their prices are MAD, I tell ya!) and I saw they had a Canon Powershot SX 100IS there for about HALF the price of the fancier counterpart at Best Buy.  I vowed to learn more about it when I got home.  And what I’ve learned is that this is quite a fabulous camera for the price.  It doesn’t have the features (or the zoom or megapixels) of the SX10IS, but does have the features that I want the most and is reportedly a good “learner” camera.  And the price would make it a lot easier for me to achieve.

HMM!  Decisions, decisions.

What would you do?

Well, I would just go for the DSLR. Of course, I would also buy a Nikon, so maybe my advice is moot.

Seriously, I have a Nikon D40x, and I love it! I went from a very nice P&S to the DSLR, and I have not regretted the extra expense one bit!

    DSLR DSLR DSLR.

Did you not read about how I finally got a new Canon XSi DSLR? And I heart it and want to have little Canon babies with it? Huh?! Have you not seen the gorgeous pictures? My darling girl, the XSi has a “dummy mode” – where you can set it and it will automatically figure out all the levels necessary. Seriously – go check out my flickr acct and you’ll be amazed at how much better the pictures are now with the DSLR.

AND, if you maintain it properly, it’ll last for a lifetime (and you can have fun buying lenses – telephoto is SO MUCH FUN!)

My camera advice: ALWAYS choose one you can grow into. There’s nothing worse than feeling like your skill level has surpassed your camera’s abilities. DSLR, for sure. If you want to really compare, check out dpreview.com. Great for side-by-side comparisons, and you can surf their gallery of shots taken with each camera. Saved me miles and hours of footwork. Love my Nikon D80!
