I saw Carrisa posting her Thanksgiving menu and I got inspired to do the same.  Except ours is probably MORE pathetic since ours will only be for TWO adults and one nine year old. Liam may eat some table scraps.  Evie gets a jar.  Yeah, we just had to beat off the social invites this year with a STICK, I tell ya.

And even goofier?  I’m not the one who will be doing the vast majority of the cooking.  HEE!  Yeah, Kile is doing it because Kile is the bomb.  So, as far as I know, this is our menu:

  • Turkey!  Of course!  I’m not sure how big it is, but it’s rather small.  We’d like to brine it but with the shopping and everything tonight?  Not sure if it’ll happen.  Chances are it’ll be your average turkey.  Which is fine by me because nothing beats turkey sandwiches the next day.
  • Gravy.  Duh.
  • Stuffing.  We don’t actually stuff the bird though, so it’s “okay”.  (That sound you heard was me rolling my eyes.)
  • Mashed Potato Casserole.  It’s unbelievably bad for you but tastes SO good.  My mom always made this for Thanksgiving and Christmas and it’s pretty much not the holidays without it.
  • Roasted Asparagus?  We’re still considering this one.  Pioneer Woman’s recipe, of course.
  • Butternut Squash Puree.  I don’t care if you don’t like squash, you need to try this stuff at least once in your life.  IT WILL TAKE OVER YOUR SOUL.
  • Rolls.  We’ve found that if you take Pillsbury pizza dough and make little balls out of it that they make FANTASTIC rolls.  So we’re gonna do that.
  • We’re sorely tempted to try these green beans.  Don’t they look awesome?  If we do these, we probably will skip the asparagus.
  • Cranberry sauce.  From the can.  What??
  • Pumpkin Pie.  it’s not Thanksgiving without it!
  • Cherry Pie?  This is my wish.  I would love cherry pie.
  • Sparkling Apple Cider.  Martinelli’s.  Again, not Thanksgiving without it.
  • Wine.  I’m thinking a nice Pinot Grigio.  You like how it seems like I know what I’m talking about?

And… that’s it.  I think that’s enough, don’t you?  GAH.  So what are you having?  And what’s your favorite?  Mine is the mashed potatoes.  BY FAR.  Though I do have a fondness for those turkey sandwhiches.

Well, this year I went crazy and decided to try ham. I got a Smithfield spiral sliced, with a honey glaze. Green bean casserole (my husband NEEDS to have this for it to be Thanksgiving). Sweet Potato Fries. Cranberries (not from a can, heaven help me). Stuffing. Martinelli’s sparkling cider. Pumpkin pie & pecan pie. Alot of it is something we’re trying to do for the first time this year. So, hopefully the stress level in the kitchen won’t be too bad. Wish us luck!

While I understand not actually stuffing the bird due to healthy & safety reasons, am I the only person that thinks that it doesn’t taste the same (and therefore not as good)?

Happy Thanksgiving! I will be jealous of your turkey & pumpkin pie tomorrow! :)

I’ve have just finished up tonights cooking duties for Turkey Day. My Mom will be cooking in my kitchen tomorrow and I get a little stabby when other people are in MY kitchen touching my stuff ;) …best to be done and out of the way. So far I’ve made Turkey breasts, apple pie, green bean casserole (from the Cooks Country Magazine…fabulous!) and mashed potatoes with an obscene amount of heavy cream and butter. We are also having Ham, oyster stuffing, homemade cranberry sauce ( although I prefer the can- shhhhh) , pumpkin cheesecake and Pillsbury Crusty French rolls ( which are AMAZING btw). Guests are bringing some misc side dishes. And of course..lots of wine…Its going to be a FEAST!

I have made that green bean recipe before (I think I got it from Mary at Owlhaven?). It was yummy, but geez I sure love asparagus much more (although the teens go more for the beans).

No matter, we are going to my mom’s, as usual. Now if I could just find that dang halo and wings I misplaced during the flood. It won’t be the same without them, and I look so strikingly like a grown-up not wearing them (at 43, no less).

As for cranberries, I have made in the past a LOVELY recipe requiring whole fresh cranberries, and Jerusalem artichokes (also called sunchokes)…and whole lot of sugar. Damn, it was so good! — at least I thought. NO one else liked it. ARgh! The jelly stuff won out.

Usually I make Challah to share. It’s Jewish Sabbath braided egg bread – not that we are Jewish, but it’s yummy. I love to make bread! I am Pagan and the ‘rents are Catholic but you can’t go wrong with a great bread!

My mom always goes overboard. She makes eleventy-nine sides (and I always have to tell her not to cook the broccoli to a soupy pulp!) and like, a ba-jillion pies. The chocolate pie is almost usually eaten by the time we get there (bless her, my mom….I think Spot his her spawn). But we have fun. And we always have TONS to take home.

May you and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving!

I guess everyone to his/her own tastes, eh?
