About

Who am I and what am I doing here? All good questions. And, because you’re so lucky, I’m going to answer them right here.

Who am I? I am Marilyn Porter. My online “pseudonym” is callistawolf. I’ve recently decided to use my real name more and more for various and sundry reasons that I’m not going to get into here right now.

Where did I get the name “callistawolf”? It’s an interesting story and one that doesn’t color me in a very non-geeky light. So prepare to have your rose-tinted preconceptions of my hipness shattered. Once up on a time, I was a major “Star Wars” fan. Back in high school and college, my friends and watched the movies all the time and would read the novels that were published. Yes, books about “Star Wars”. And in one of these books was a character named “Callista”. While I didn’t really care for the character (she had the hots for Luke, which EW, who would have the hots for HIM??), I thought the name was pretty. Also in college and in my early married life, I would play these online games called “MUDs”. It’s stands for “Multi-User Dungeon” and was a basic text-based precursor to today’s MMORPG (think World of Warcraft and Everquest and the like). (And yes, I am feeling very ashamed right about now) Anyhow I used the name “Callista” when I played and often my character would belong to the “werewolf” class because I thought werewolves were cool. At least, cooler than vampires and demons and those were the other main choices. So I would often append my name so that it showed up on the “who” list as “Callista Wolf”. I soon found that putting the two together gave me a pretty decent username and one that was virtually NEVER taken. It just sorta stuck. So yeah. That’s where that comes from.

Where am I from? I grew up in the southern valley of San Jose, CA. I lived in the same house for 18 years. I moved to Reno, NV when I went to college up here and just sorta stuck around. Partially because I met Kile at school and he got a job at the university after graduation and it was just the easier choice. Plus, we live almost EXACTLY in between our parents which is handy. I’m not going to get into any specifics on where in Reno we live. It’s still a small enough city that we’d be easy to find if I did and I don’t want anyone to stalk me. Not that it’s likely, but you know.

When did you start blogging? I started this blog on December 22, 2004. It was called “Inconceivable” at the time. Also, a little bonus trivia: I started out blogging on Blogspot. I switched to WordPress mere days later because Blogspot sucks. You may notice the archives of this blog go back further than December 22, 2004. That’s because I’ve entered posts I made in my journal, for posterity’s sake, mostly. I still have some more posts to enter, but I doubt I’ll “backdate” anything any earlier than my current “earliest” posts, dated February 2003. I changed the name of the blog from “Inconceivable” to “Slackermama” in August of 2006, following the birth of my son Liam.

Why do you blog? That’s a trickier and more long-winded answer so I’m simply going to say: it’s good therapy. I blog about 95% for myself and my own benefit. That said, I do love to know I have readers and getting comments makes me practially giddy so please do introduce yourself. I try to respond to comments but I’m not real good at it.

Now that you’ve blabbed all about yourself, do you have any family you’d like to mention? Whoops. My bad. Yes, I have a family. A wonderful family. I may gripe about them on here from time, but I know I’m lucky. There’s my husband Kile, who is 5 1/2 years older than I am (I remind him of this often). There’s our oldest son, Harrison who is currently 7 and in elementary school. Then there’s the baby, Liam who was born July 7, 2006. We also have two dogs. Both are rat terriers and one is Beetoe (short for Mistletoe) who we got in December of 2001 and the pup, Poptart, who we got in February 2007.

Now for something entirely boring: I try (I mean, really try) to reply to my comments.  Sadly, I’m not able to get to every comment all the time.  So if you leave a comment and don’t hear from me, please don’t assume that I’m sitting here trying to find ways to torture you.  I’m probably up to my eyeballs in diapers (ew) or out of town or GIVING BIRTH or something.  You know.  But I do want you all to know that I LOVE all my comments.  The big, the little, the goofy, the poignant, the absurd… they’re all fabulous in my eyes.  So please know that I read each and every single comment that comes my way.  If you have a question that you really would like answered, it would increase your likelihood of getting a response if you dropped me a line via my contact form.  And don’t forget; I love you all!  My blog would be bupkiss without my fabulous readers!

Voila! That’s about all I can think of for now, but if any other “FAQ” occurr to me, I’ll be sure to include them in here. Thanks for stopping by and don’t be afraid to dig through my archives or use my search function. Also: the “Noteworthy” category should (SHOULD) contain some of the more “landmark” style posts.
