You Need to Read - July 19

by Marilyn on July 19, 2008

It’s going to be a short list this week, people.  Plainly put, I didn’t get a lot of blog reading done this week (GEE I WONDER WHY).  Right now, it’s 6:30 am and I’m typing this in the dark of my hotel room while my son and husband are alternating their snores.  I would be sleeping too but I had to pee SO BAD that after putting it off for a few hours, I finally just had to get up.  No point in trying to go back to sleep now, right?  AHEM, where was I?  Oh yes.  Short list.  A lot of these posts are BlogHer themed (for which I apologize, non-attendees!), but that is what I was obsessed with the earlier part of this week.  So without further ado…

  • BlogHer 08 from loraleeslooneytunes.com.  This guest post made me laugh so hard that gin and tonic came out my nose.  Seriously.  Especially the part that lists out reasons for not going to BlogHer.  Even if you’re not doing BlogHer this year (perhaps especially if), you have to check this post out.
  • A conversation with my daughter that finally explains my relationship with my older sister from dooce.  Ha, ha.  How original.  Highlight a post from DOOCE.  But seriously, you guys, I loved this post.  And little kids that ask for siblings just warm the cold, dark, cockles of my heart.
  • Is there such a thing as happily ever after? from Absolutely Bananas.  OMG, the Seal Saga.  Does it sound terribly dorky of me to admit that I was glued to this entire drama every time she posted about it?  I do believe I even wringed my hands a time or two.
  • BlogHer ‘08 Conference FAQ from Mom-101.  This was pretty funny, an interesting take on all the “Newbie’s Guides” that have been going around the blogosphere in anticipation of the Big Conference.  This post here told me that I could just settle down, step back, and relax about the whole darned thing.  Which, you know, is only IMPOSSIBLE to do!
  • Don’t Judge Me from Dutch Blitz.  I have felt like this A LOT when it comes to blogging.  I’ve had family members give me “looks” and make semi-snide comments about the level of “interest” I have in blogging.  Cheeses me right off, it does.  I loved her responses.

So that’s actually it.  All I have this week.  I’m sure next week, I’ll have more and I fear they will be even MORE BlogHer themed.  As for how the conference is going… I can tell I already have some regrets.  There are also some things that I wish were done differently.  BUT, it’s only half over at this point.  Just because Day 1 was rough, doesn’t mean it all will be, right?  (RIGHT??)  Still, Day 2 will be rough as I think we’ll need to leave at 2pm.  SUCK.  I’ll fill all ya’ll in later. GOOD TIMES.

(edited to add hours later when I realize this is just sitting here in drafts: It would probably help to actually publish this post, don’t you think?  DUH.  This should tell you how I’m doing here in S.F.)

Soooo… what did I do today?

This.

I will update if there is a podcast or something (OMG, THE SOUND OF MY VOICE).  Pictures will be (hopefully) forthcoming.

I am officially exhausted.

Ready or not…

Here we come!

Gone to BlogHer 08

Yep, we’re leaving this morning.  We’re packing up the v an to head over the mountains.  We won’t be going to San Francisco just yet, but we’ll be close.  And other than the usual road trip jitters (traveling with four other people where three of them are below the age of consent is as close to hell as I ever hope to get), I’m feeling pretty groovy.

Of course, this will all change tomorrow morning first thing when we fling ourselves headlong into California traffic in an effort to get to the Westin by 8am.

I’d like to be able to say this is the last blog post you’ll see from me this weekend, but who are we kidding?  Still, you can also look for updates from me on Twitter and Flickr.  And if you’re going to BlogHer?  I’LL SEE YA TOMORROW, BETCHES!  (SQUEE!)

Things I should do today

by Marilyn on July 15, 2008

Time is ticking down until I have to stuff our family (again) into a minivan and drive for a good 4+ hours.  This means that I should probably have things prepared and ready to go for when that moment arrives (as it stands, we’re planning to leave early on Thursday).  Because having to throw everything together Thursday morning would, in a word, suck.  So in an effort to be at least somewhat organized, here is what I should be doing today:

  • Make up a few packing lists so we can cut down on the number of “Oh man, you know what we forgot?” moments.
  • Laundry.  Lots and lots of laundry.  And after that?  More laundry.
  • Pick up the kitchen, including washing dishes and mopping the floor so neighbor won’t be horrified when coming over to care for dogs.
  • Ask said neighbor if he can even watch the dogs.  For all we know, he’ll be out of town this weekend!
  • Figure out, once and for all, what shirt i will wear with my jeans on Saturday.  I have an idea, but I think that shirt is a bit tight and probably not conducive to breastfeeding easily.
  • Make sure my business cards are packed.
  • List out-grown prefolds (cloth diapers) for sale on Diaper Swappers and hope that brings in a little extra $.
  • Did I mention laundry?  Because I gotta do some of that.

Now, how much of this will actually get done?  (By this I mean: how much time will I instead hang out on Twitter watching the updates scroll by?  Because I feel like that’s all I’ve done so far.)

Chubette
Gratuitous Chubby Baby Shot (because I can) (do you just not LOVE the heart-shaped cherries onesie??)

Out of Ideas (and money)

by Marilyn on July 14, 2008

The only thing I can think of today is how I don’t have enough money for anything I want right now. (whine whine whine)  No one really wants to hear about that.  Seriously.  No one.

Anything else I would have to talk about is BlogHer, but it would (again) cycle back to “No moneeeey!! WAHH!”

BAH and POOP on that.

(Just in case SOMEONE is interested, let me elaborate somewhat.)

  • My meals are pretty much taken care of, but what about Kile?  He joked yesterday about crashing the conference, walking in on lunch, attending sessions, etc.  Seriously though, what will he eat?  We’re thinking on packing some simple foods to pack with us.  We’ll have to have a cooler anyhow to transport milk for Liam to drink so it probably wouldn’t take much more to bring him some simple food.  BUT STILL.  I fret.  And worry.
  • This leads to wondering if the childcare provided at BlogHer includes food for the kiddos.  Would be great if it did, and on the other hand, am nervous for the poor souls who try to feed Liam.  SO PICKY.
  • I’m still fretting about the whole jeans/shoes issue.  I know sneakers are an obvious choice.  My sneakers are about four years old, though, and look it.  Besides sneakers, I own flip flops.  With the length on my jeans (particularly the ones I plan to wear Saturday), I really can’t get away with wearing flip flops with them.  Well, I do have my “Ugg-style” boots, but NO.  Will not take those to BlogHer.  I’m pretty much a “fashion don’t” but I have to draw the line somewhere.  I have been perusing payless.com and fondling the shoes through the screen, but that’s not helping anything.  FRUSTRATION.
  • Let’s talk about gas prices.  No, wait.  On second thought, we better not.  I’d just get pissed off.

Yeah.  That’s what I thought.  No one wants to hear about that.

In lieu of that conversation, I have pretty much nothing else to say.  I’ve been obsessively following Twitter all morning long, reading lots of BlogHer themed posts and feeling, ever so slightly, as if my head is about to spin off my shoulders and go flying across the floor.  Anticipation does that to me.
