ONE. WEEK. One week from today we’ll be harping at Harry to finish getting ready for school and, for the love of all that’s holy, eat his breakfast already. One week from today we will be going through my suitcase one last time, making sure I have chewing gum and my camera packed. One week from today I’ll be getting lots of last minute loving in on Liam, showering him with hugs and kisses and trying to memorize everything about him that I’ll miss over the next four days. One week from today we’ll be saying our goodbye’s to Harry as he gets on the school bus for the day, telling him to have fun on his field trip that day and that we’ll see him this evening when his grandparents bring him by the hospital to visit. One week from today I’ll be watching everyone else eat breakfast and drink their coffee and tea and try to ignore the rumbling in my stomach. One week from today, I imagine I’ll be more excited than I can handle and more than a little nervous too.
I can’t believe that it’s only one week now. One week until The Great C-Section. The C-Section To End All C-Sections. The day we will meet Evelyn, the last of our children, but not the least. Oh my dear heart, I don’t think I can take it.
So in the meantime, I’m going to try to distract myself as best as I can. Join me, will you?
Yesterday thankfully improved, as I figured it probably would. I took a nap after we had lunch and it’s amazing how good those naps make me feel. And yes, I did start to realize that I would of course be going to this appointment on Friday, reluctant and annoyed as I am. And I still am annoyed. VERY. But… gotta do what I gotta do, right?
After my nap, I saw this comment and it just literally made my day. I was so tickled that someone from BabyCenter had read my blog and even moreso that they were defending the whole fruit-comparison thing. I watched the slideshow and it was interesting and almost made the whole fruit thing even MORE absurd. But I could definitely appreciate the sentiment behind it. Shoot, goofy as some of the fruit comparisons are, I always look for that first in my weekly development emails. I have to see what fruit this week will bring. We also had McDonald’s for dinner, which always makes things feel a little better somehow (yes, even though it’s McDonald’s). I think it’s the special sauce on the Big Mac that does it. And then I saw that P-Dub had updated her love story on her blog and nothing could make me feel more giddy than that. Except perhaps this. And, it should be noted, I was almost as excited to read that filming has begun on “Half-Blood Prince” than I was to learn that “Deathly Hallows” was going to be a two-parter. It makes sense, really. That book is far too long and far too awesome to butcher to pieces. Am already way psyched for 2010. To top it off, “Big Brother 9? last night delivered the awesomeness of returning James to the house. I like James, probably more than anyone in the house (perhaps Chelseia aside), because he’s real and the rest of them are a bunch of ego-maniac nut-jobs. I’m hoping he wins HoH. (Don’t spoil me if you already know!)
So after a turdy begin to my day, I have to say it ended up rather pleasantly. That’s about as much as I could ask for, right?
OMG. ONE. WEEK.
I woke up this morning, my mouth all dried out and sticky, a headache pounding away in my temple and the distinct impression that I had dreamed about Ellen Page and Seth Rogan all night long. And that French chick who won Best Actress. (As I can even remember her name, let alone spell it.)
It was quite a night for the Academy. It seemed like their number one goal last night was to keep me in a perpetual state of confusion. “Wait, I thought they started out with the Best Supporting Actor category!”, “Why are they doing Best Actress NOW?”, “Why do all these song performances keep making me want to stab out my eyeballs?”. Plus, they seemed to want to dispel any preconceived notions I may have had and at one point I was certain they were just giving out the awards to random people. Still, at the heart of it, was Jon Stewart and lo, he rocked. Three cheers for Jon Stewart. I don’t think I could have made it the 3 1/2 hours without him. Okay, I have to give credit to the MamaPop betches too, because reading their reactions over at MamaPopTalk was enough to keep me in perpetual stitches.
Anyhow, here are a couple of my observations from the evening (which got crankier as the night wore on):
- It was Year of the French Peeps, apparently. They kept winning all these awards! And I had no idea who any of them were! My son noticed this first and remarked on the trend which caused me to issue forth a very profound, “Yeah!”
- I didn’t realize until halfway through the “Best Actress” category that Ruby Dee played Mother Abigail on Stephen King’s The Stand (aired on TV a coons age ago). DUDE. That freaked me out. I love that movie.
- I’ve had a thing against the “Best Song” category ever since the year that Moulin Rouge was not nominated for any song. Yes, I know that a great deal of the songs in that movie were simply covers of existing versions. But the best song, “Come What May” was NOT nominated and that pissed me off. Wikipedia assures me that “It should be noted that “Come What May” (the only original song in the film) was disqualified from nomination for an Oscar because it was originally written (but unused) for Luhrmann’s previous film William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet and not written expressly for Moulin Rouge!“ However, I don’t care about the technicalities because that’s just a TRAVESTY of JUSTICE. So I’ve been annoyed with the entire category ever since.
- I was highly offended that Transformers was shut out of all three awards it was nominated for (the little-cared-about Visual Effects, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing). Harry was also pretty peeved and from then on out whenever The Bourne Ultimatum would win something he would scream with frustration. Seriously though, how can Transformers NOT win “Best Visual Effects”?? Seriously? Did they even WATCH it? GAH.
In the end, I walked away with 12 correct predictions in our Intra-Family Oscar Pool but Kile edged me out with 13 correct (he picked Sweeney Todd for Art Direction). Harry mustered 3 which impressed me and at one point I wouldn’t have been surprised one bit if he got more right than I did. So Kile gets to pick where we go out to lunch after church next Sunday. High stakes, people.
Harry was packed off to bed when it was over (shortly after 9 here in the Pacific Time Zone) and even though I was exhausted (remember the trip to Winnemucca?), we stayed up another hour and watched the Barbara Walter’s Special. I liked that it ended with Harrison Ford, who still delights me even though he’s 65 (gah!).
So tell me, if you watched, what did you think of the show? Who had the best outfit? Who had the worst? I think Tilda Swinton and Diablo Cody both should have seriously reconsidered their choices. But I think most everyone else looked fabulous (okay, save for Nicole Kidman’s necklace). And did Jon Steward totally rock like I think he did? You know he did.
Heath Ledger.
Where do I begin? I guess I should start by saying that I’m unnaturally upset by the news of his death. Even just now, typing that sentence, I felt the urge to delete it. Because I don’t want to really believe it. I don’t want it to be true. I want it to end up being a huge TMZ prank and we all start laughing because, “Oh, those guys!” It’s not, and I know that. But I keep hoping. And then I wonder why I’m so upset and disturbed by this.
I didn’t know the guy personally, after all. I can’t even quite remember the first movie I saw him in. I CAN remember, however, the first movie I loved him in. That was “10 Things I Hate About You”. And if you haven’t seen it, rent it. I don’t know what it was about that particular character. I think maybe it was the part where he sang ”Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” to Julia Stiles’ character in front of the whole football field. That was pretty much when I fell in love. And it’s been love ever since. I might not always love the movies he’s in, but I always can appreciate his performance. Like “Brokeback Mountain” which I thought was actually a pretty mediocre movie. Didn’t care for it much and for Jake Gyllenhaall even less. BUT, say what you will about the movie, Heath Ledger was out of this world in that movie. My husband, who actually grew up in Riverton, Wyoming (where the film supposedly mostly takes place and I can tell you, the real Riverton looks NOTHING like that), says that he was amazed at how well Heath nailed the average cowboy/ranchhand of the area and era. He says he had to have known no less than five guys who acted just like Heath’s character (well, except for the whole gay thing).
Then, there’s his little girl. Little Matilda. All reports say that she just idolized her dad and that dad was just as enamored of her. Now… she has no dad. Will she even remember him at all? Or will she only have stories her mother tells her about her dad? Or, even worse, just his films and her imagination? I can’t imagine.
And, I can’t help but think it’s an enormous loss to Hollywood. Here we had a young actor who had talent and great potential and he’s gone. Last year, we had Anna Nichole and everyone just lost their minds when she died and what did SHE DO? She had no acting talent. No singing talent. The two losses, side by side… well, there’s no comparison. None at all. Every death is a tragedy, of course, and the daughter Anna left behind is a tragedy in and of itself. But which was the greater loss to Hollywood? I don’t think it’s even a contest.
Then I look at Britney Spears… she’s got young children at home (and let’s face it, is moderately talent-less) and has everything to lose and we are supposed to tune in and watch her destroy her life one moment at a time. And, considering the fragility of life and the outcome of throwing that life away… I just wish she would look beyond herself for a change. I doubt Health Ledger’s death has even registered on her radar, but it should.
And, I guess I’m scared that if something were to happen to Britney, that we’d have a National Day of Mourning and she just doesn’t deserve it.
I’m not sure how this evolved into a rant about Britney. I just wanted to say that Heath Ledger was a great actor, a great father and is a great loss to the entertainment industry. Such a shame. Such a loss.
Thanks to everyone who responded on yesterday’s rather lengthy post (yes, even jacksmith, whose passion on the topic was almost a little scary). I’m just amazed that so many of you actually read through the entire thing because it was long and rather rant-y. But, it’s a hot button issue of mine. I don’t know what the solution is, but I know there needs to be one.
Anyhow, to lift those spirits and remind us that it is indeed Christmas, I need to share with you this video:
Awesome, no? Someone here in the area did this (much reminiscent of a light show using the same song last year, no?) and we’re hoping to maybe go take a look at it this weekend. Thing is, we were in the area last Saturday and if I’d known it was there, we totally would have gone to look because DUDE. That’s freaking awesome. This guy’s neighbors HATE HIM.
And while I’m in a video-sharing sort of mood, you have to look at this if you are even remotely a fan of “Lost”:
EEEEEEHHHHHH!!!! I know, huh? January 31st can’t come soon enough. I saw enough goodies in that clip to make my tongue liquify. And did you notice that at the end there, the logo of the island reflected a city in the water? Dude, what’s THAT about? Much as I’m happy that “Biggest Loser” and “Big Brother” will be back so soon this winter, I’m so excited that there is at least one scripted show to look forward to.
See, don’t you feel better now?
