How we scored a free lunch on Mother’s Day

by Marilyn on May 11, 2008

All in all, I’m pretty impressed.  I’ve had a really pretty awesome Mother’s Day.  We went to see “Speed Racer” last night (Oy, the seizures that movie gives a person!) so it was a late night.  Nevertheless, Kile was up early this morning and took Evie off my hands so I was able to stretch out and luxuriate in peace.  And I did, for about an hour.  God bless it.  While the boys fixed me breakfast, I took a quick shower and then came downstairs to hot coffee with chocolate creamer, a mimosa, sausage links and blueberry pancakes.  Hoo boy.

And I got presents too!  Two gift cards for Kohls from each of the boys, a Bath and Body Works gift set from Evie and Mario Kart Wii with an extra wheel from Kile.  He explained that he wanted to get me a new laptop bag and preorder WiiFit for me to slip inside.  However, he couldn’t find any laptop bags like I’ve been wanting and apparently Nintendo understimated the preorders for WiiFit and now they aren’t allowing anymore.  Seems there are more preorders than actual WiiFit’s being shipped out.  GAH.  So, Kile said I could go ahead and get WiiFit after the first of June if I want.  The Mario Kart Wii isn’t REALLY for me, after all, as it’s something Harry and Kile have been wanting, not me.  And Kile was planning to get it anyhow.

Next we headed to church where I got a rose for being the “Newest Mom” in attendance.  Aw, shucks.  After church, we headed to lunch.  We decided to go down to the “froo froo” mall (the one that stole my Sephora) and try a chain Italian grill there that we haven’t been to before.  I’d heard it was pretty good.  We were able to get right in, which was a bonus.  And then we waited.  And waited.  And waited.  We had long since not only picked out our drink orders, but what we wanted to order to eat.  Finally, Kile flagged down a nearby waitress and she took our orders, though somewhat uncertainly.  Evie started to get snippy so I took her back to the bathroom to feed her (I’m not much of a nursing in public type).  By the time we headed back to the table, I fully expected to see our drinks there.  They were not. We were getting increasingly annoyed.  We had been at the restaurant for a good half hour at this point.

Our food was delivered and… still no drinks.  Plus, my side salad had morphed into a gargantuan Gorgonzola salad.  Apparently the waitress had heard me say garden salad and heard Gorgonzola.  She explained that they didn’t have a garden salad.  We then had to point out that we meant the “house salad”.  Whatever.  SAME DIFFERENCE.  She went to go see about getting the salad replaced, leaving the enormous salad on the table.  Oookay.  Evie decided she was most certainly NOT done eating so I took her out to the van, leaving my entrée untouched (and still no “garden” salad or drinks either!).  And she took her time too.

We finally made it back into the restaurant to find Kile nearly finished with his meal (as a result, I decided to just take my entire meal home in a box, to have for lunch tomorrow).  My “garden” salad had been delivered and the offending Gorgonzola was removed.  The drinks were there too and good thing because I was pretty thirsty.  I went to take a drink of my lemonade and… it wasn’t lemonade.  Sure, it looked like lemonade.  But it was more like water with essence of lemonade in it.  GAH.  Apparently, there had been a kerfluffle with the drinks as well.  She had given Harry a lemonade and me a Dr. Pepper (which is what Harry ordered) so we had to correct that as well.  And we never had gotten just plain water, while the people at the table next to us had.  Bleh.  To top it off, the bill had been delivered… and the news was not good.

Kile and I’s meals were several dollars more expensive than the price listed in the menu.  We were charged for the Gorgonzola salad.  We needed to have the lemonade taken off the bill since it was NOT lemonade.  As I ate my “garden” salad, Kile spoke with the manager and very politely explained the issues we’d been having with our meal.  She was very apologetic and explained the increased price on the bill was because it was Mother’s Day and they were using the dinner menu prices instead of the lunch menu prices and we had been given the wrong menus to order from.  Still, she felt bad and comped our meal.  She even got us bowls of ice cream for the boys on the house as well.

So all in all, it wasn’t so bad.  After all, how can you complain when it ends up being FREE?  Plus, we went to Kohls next and I spent my giftcards on some fabulous clothes.  I got stuff for a wedding we’re going to in June as well as church and BlogHer this summer.  I’m way psyched.  One of those things is a wrap dress in black and white that I’m actually excited about.  I haven’t worn an actual dress since, like, I got MARRIED.  But it’s adorable.  And I got a skirt too that is just gorgeous.  Now I just need cute shoes to go with all these cute clothes. Don’t ya think?

Kile is making me dinner (the boys are already eating so they can go to bed here shortly) and he’s making me this.  Are you jealous?  You should be.

So how was your Mother’s Day?  I hope all of you hard working mamas out there got properly spoiled.  Tell me what your loved ones did for you!
